The Akai S950, one of the most famous samplers from the 80s, is largely praised for its legendary sound. Many consider the 12-bit grit and crunch still unmatched today. But the 12-bit resolution is not all. For over a year, Inphonik studied every bit of this studio gear masterpiece to bring back its unique character to your modern DAW with the RX950.

RYM2612 Iconic FM Synthesizer

Synth of Rage

RYM2612 is a software FM synthesizer in VST, Audio Unit and AAX formats. It’s an emulation of the Yamaha YM2612 sound chip, best known for being the vibrant voice of the Sega Genesis/Megadrive videogame console.

More than a simple sound-alike, the emulation is cycle-accurate to the original chip, that allows reproducing every unique possibility of the synth.

On top of this, the amp circuitry of the console has been reproduced too, in order to obtain the same grain you’d get if you plugged the real hardware into your DAW.

Not many people were aware of this, but unlike other videogame consoles, the Sega* Genesis/Megadrive had a complete FM synth onboard. Besides the obvious 12-bit resolution, the 26.041 kHz sample rate, and the SSM2044 low-pass filter emulation, the RX1200 perfectly matches the aliased down-pitch tuning that delivers the SP-1200. It would be a shame not to take advantage of your computer mouse. The sample editor makes it easy to browse, truncate, normalize, reverse, loop and assign your sounds across the 4 banks of 8 pads. It’s an efficient and intuitive way to craft your own presets for building your grooves.

Packed with a Factory Collection of 900+ samples built into 50 presets, the RX1200 is ready to perform out of the box. The Factory Collection contains 122 kicks, 139 snares, 169 hi-hats, 47 toms, 32 cymbals, 120 percs, 50 FX, 32 bass, 41 keys, 151 slices, and 33 others. In the next few months, a series of new free collections, sorted by theme, will be added regularly to expand your RX1200 experience.

The unique 1200 lofi sound

To save sampling memory, SP-1200 owners often sampled 33 RPM records at 45 RPM, and then tuned down the sample on the SP-1200 to restore the original speed. This technique doubled the sampling time but lowered the sound quality. Surprisingly, this altered sound became popular among hip hop producers and many best-selling records of the 90s used the SP-1200.

The RX1200‘s Speed feature changes your samples’ playing speed to enjoy the distinguished sound obtained by lowering the tune fader.

►RX950

The RX950 Classic AD/DA Converter is an effect that brings the signature sound color and character of the Akai S950 to your music, in real time. With a ridiculously small bunch of controls, using the RX950 is quick and easy for bringing thickness and warmth to any sound. The gain boosts your level and adds a warm soft-saturation texture, the audio bandwidth digitally softens the high-frequencies, and the inimitable low-pass filter will please any crowd.

Weapons of choice

The E-mu SP-1200 and Akai S950 are two iconic samplers that were widely used by music producers and beat makers in the 1990s. These samplers were popular for their unique sound and features, which made them ideal for creating the gritty, sample-based beats that became synonymous with hip-hop and other genres of electronic music at the time.

The E-mu SP-1200 was first released in 1987 and quickly became a go-to sampler for many producers. It had a limited sample time of only 10 seconds, which meant that producers had to be creative with how they used their samples. This limitation also gave the SP-1200 its unique sound, with a gritty, lo-fi quality that many producers loved.

The Akai S950, which was released a few years later in 1988, was a 12-bit sampler like the SP-1200 but had a more advanced sound processing, thanks to its 48 kHz sampling rate, its 12-bit linear quantization and a much better filtering system, along with a slightly longer sample time.

Iconic in the 1990s, the two machines continue to be revered by many producers and beatmakers today, not only for their unique sound and features but also for the role they played in shaping the sound of hip-hop and electronic music.
