In terms of compression, this is the all in one tool you’ve been dreaming of. Packed into its compact design you will find 3 different effects. A Transient Shaper, Multiband Compressor and Parallel Compressor. It allows you to combine the power of these 3 amazing tools to create a brand new, unique and powerful sound. Puncher not only allows you to to control the amount of the applied effect, it also allows you to control the effect itself. Offering advanced options for each effect you can fine tune every aspect as much as you like. Inside Puncher you will also find 48 configured presets made for various genres and instruments.

Puncher is designed to give you absolute tonal control of transient energy so that you can customize and shape those sounds.

Rather than have 3 separate units, Puncher has the 3 elements you need to give your mix that clear extra punch, all in one compact plugin.

Transient Shaper

The ‘Transients’ section lets you shape the transients and sustain of your tracks. The main mix control lets you set the intensity of the effect, while the advanced settings give you control over the stereo linking, bandwidth and envelope length of the detection signal, as well as the maximum boost overage or cut that you want to apply to your signal’s transients or sustain.

Multiband Compressor

The ‘Multiband’ section divides your track into 4 bands with subtractive IIR filters, creating a real-time linear phase Multiband split. Every band has its own compressor that applies logarithmic attack and release directly to the required gain reduction value, instead of to the detection signal, smoothing out the compression effect in an analog fashion.

Parallel Compressor

The Parallel section lets you apply smooth parallel compression to even out the dynamics in your track in a very natural way, or create a powerful compression effect. You can also reduce the dynamic range without reduction to the peak level. The compressor has a continuous RMS time control and a knee width control that will let you fine tune the compressor’s sensitivity to react aggressive and digital, or silky and analog. By adding a parallel compressor to work with the Multiband band compressor this increases the effective compression ratio and makes the processing more obvious and effective.

In addition to expanding transient peaks, Puncher allows you to shape the frequency response of the transient as well as the sustain signal. What is dual – mode?

Dual mode allows YOU to switch from peak compression (regular mode) to RMS compression (buss mode).

If you route your drum tracks (or any other group of tracks) into a group track, you are able to compress this group as a whole. Tying or “gluing” the individual elements to perform as one. The Buss mode is designed especially for that, It reacts to the RMS (root mean square) or the average of the signal, creating a smooth and musical compression. Regular mode reacts to the peaks of the signal, with it, you are able to dynamically shape the individual tracks. Keep in mind that some individual tracks will benefit much more from RMS compression and some groups or mixes will benefit more from peak compression, so experiment and see what works best for your track.

Faithful and unique emulation of an old German broadcast compressor/limiter unit U73b. Second generation of the famous plug-in.

The device was often used for mastering between 1960 and 1980. It is an all tube vary-mu compressor/limiter with adjustable release time option. We kept the circuit exactly as it was originally designed and only added input and output gain (before and right after compressor circuit) to help with proper adjustment of the compression. The plugin effect has been also supplemented with a VU meter and selectable side-chaining. U73b is great for mastering, mixing drums, bass, guitar, vocals and voice overs.

Controls

The compressor’s controls are very easy, but the effect of this unique device is audible at the same moment you turn it on.

Compressor/Limiter switch – is the upper U73b knob and it switches between Compressor mode (Kompr), Bypass (Durchschalt) and Limiter mode (Begr). The compressor mode has lower threshold setting and very gentle increasing ratio, in opposite, the limiter mode provides higher threshold setting with higher ratio but still with smooth knee.

  • Release time – the first three positions offer fixed release time, the other three positions (marked red) provide adjustable program content dependent release time option.
  • IN – adjust input gain before the compressor/limiter circuit
  • OUT – adjust output gain after the compressor/limiter circuit
  • Key input – selects the signal source used for controlling the gain reduction
  • HPF – U73b is a vintage device and as such it may not meet present mastering demands. We added a bass management button that simply switches between original sound and desired modern sound (without low frequencies bypass

Based on the acclaimed Fairchild 670, a new set of attack ballistics was created to accommodate modern production styles, the ‘warmth’ factor was tweaked, and the U670 was born.

Moo Tube

An all tube design emulation, with some unique twists. Mid range sensitivity, attack and recovery time ranges, and output frequency response characteristics were all re-worked by McDSP engineering.

iComp

Attack and release times are not adjustable, but are instead automatically updated based on user selected threshold and ratio control values. Good on songs headed to iTunes.

Opto-C/Opto-L

These Opto models use McDSP designed key signal circuits for an improved response from the originals. The Opto models also use a different release characteristic, because we like to tweak!

British-C

The British-C model offers the standard compressor control set, but McDSP added internal smarts to prevent unwanted distortion, even at extreme compression settings – not unlike other high-end analog compressors from this part of the world.

SST’76

The FET Compressor is an impressively faithful modeling of one of the most iconic compressors of all time. FET Compressor is loved for its aggressiveness and its tendency to add some tasty distortion to the sound source when driven hard. This compressor loves to be slammed and abused. But few things are so good they can’t be improved, so we added a couple of nice features that makes it even more flexible than the hardware original.

In general, the FET Compressor can be used for deeper gain reduction than you would normally use with any compressor. The reason is that even at extreme settings, the FET Compressor shows no trace of the pinched sound many other compressors make when you push them hard. This ability for strict gain control is not least useful on lead vocal tracks that need to be kept in the listener’s face. The distortion also adds a nice grit to the voice, highly useable in rock mixes but in no way limited to that.

Another common use for the FET is in drum mixing, where many engineers use it on room microphones, overheads or across the entire drum buss. Used this way, the FET Compressor has a way of bringing out a large, explosive sound in the Led Zeppelin vein. This is also an application where parallel compression is a useful technique, so we added the Parallel Inject control to facilitate this. To reduce kick drum pumping or let the bass guitar’s low end bloom, use the side chain filter.

But there are still many more uses for the FET. Bass, acoustic guitars, pianos – bring out some edge or use the compressor’s fastest attack setting to round off any transients.

The Denise New York Compressor is a straightforward NY-style compressor for making percussive loops, beats and drums sound more powerful. Set to its default settings, you can quickly dial in the recognizable explosive and punchy sound associated with this particular style of compression. But the Denise New York Compressor has a trick up its sleeve: a continuous RMS-time control. Usually, generic compressors only give you the choice between peak and RMS set to a fixed length of 30ms. However, having a continuous RMS-time control, allows you to easily fine tune the compression to create maximal impact. Together with its different timbre styles, vintage option and stereo linking, the Denise New York Compressor is a powerful tool to quickly give your mix that much sought-after explosive and punchy sound.

1. “You like the NY-style sound of a particular compressor, but it doesn’t seem to produce the extreme explosive and punchy sound you are looking for.” Most generic compressors have an RMS function set to a fixed length of 30ms, limiting your options to fine tune the compressors internal detection signal to the particular track. Compensating for this with the attack and release features usually does more harm than good. Developers usually simulate the vintage compressors by analyzing the circuits and test signals. That way it takes a long time to emulate a single compressor and it is prone to all kinds of errors. We took a very different approach – we designed a dynamics processor so versatile, that it could simulate almost anything. And we definitely didn’t dare to set it up manually afterwards – we let the computers do that for us!

It took the computers a long time and didn’t spare us days of listening tests and manual work, but it still got us to a great emulation of more than a dozen classic compressors in a record time :). They don’t sound exactly the same, after all not even the originals don’t sound exactly the same to one another. But maybe MTurboComp sounds better then the originals. Just try and listen for yourself.

This classic compressor is all about gentle and natural sounding gain reduction. It effortlessly keeps your material’s dynamics controlled without ever strangling the sound. Everything you put into the TLA-100A comes out the other end big and compact sounding.

The Summit Audio TLA-100A works in a program dependent manner, meaning it does a lot of the thinking for you. It’s tremendously easy to use and basically impossible to make it sound bad. Deft Compressor is an audio signal compressor plug-in for professional audio production applications.  The characteristic feature of this compressor is its ability to produce “slim” and “slick” sounding compression, with intelligibility enhancement effect.  Such result is achieved by compressor’s timing function that closely resembles the S-curve (sigmoid curve) on both attack and release stages.  S-curve timing function also helps compressor to sound “warm” and “clean” at most settings.

+10db Compressor is meticulously modelled after one of the industries most iconic hardware compressors. Unless you refuse to listen to any music after Beethoven, you most certainly have heard this unit in action. Best yet, this is the first time this hardware unit has been available in plugin format.

+10db Compressor is the first of it’s kind channel strip plugin. This plugin is modelled after a very highly sought after compressor hardware unit. We didn’t just use the hardware unit for inspiration, we dug in deep and made sure that it sounded just like the original.

Why Did We Model This Unit?

Here’s the deal. It seems like everybody is modelling hardware these days, but we wanted to do something a little different. We didn’t want to model any hardware units that have been done a million times. We wanted to do something that had never been done before but has been an icon in the recording industry, and the only way to do that was to team up with producer/mixer David Bendeth. He just happened to have a few of these in his rack, so he sent us one to pour over.

Unless you stopped listening to music after “Johnny B Goode” then you have most definitely heard this hardware unit many many times. Think of Led Zeppelin drums.

In order to get this same compressor in hardware, not only would you have to pay over $2,000 to get one, but you’d have to deal with all the other drawbacks of using analog hardware. For a very small fraction of the price, you can get that same sound in the much more convenient software format. There are really no downsides (unless you live in Alaska an need a room heater)

A Few Extra Features

Since we weren’t bound by the limits of the analog hardware, we took the liberty of adding a couple features that make this even more powerful than the original hardware. For one, we added a “Dry Passthrough” knob that makes parallel compression super easy, without having to set up extra buses.

6030 Compressor Modules

U670

Based on the acclaimed Fairchild 670, a new set of attack ballistics was created to accommodate modern production styles, the ‘warmth’ factor was tweaked, and the U670 was born.

Moo Tube

An all tube design emulation, with some unique twists. Mid range sensitivity, attack and recovery time ranges, and output frequency response characteristics were all re-worked by McDSP engineering.

iComp

Attack and release times are not adjustable, but are instead automatically updated based on user selected threshold and ratio control values. Good on songs headed to iTunes.

Opto-C/Opto-L

These Opto models use McDSP designed key signal circuits for an improved response from the originals. The Opto models also use a different release characteristic, because we like to tweak!

British-C

The British-C model offers the standard compressor control set, but McDSP added internal smarts to prevent unwanted distortion, even at extreme compression settings – not unlike other high-end analog compressors from this part of the world.

The ultimate rhythm section compressor, Comp VCA-65 is a perfectly recreated VCA compressor with a modern twist.

When it was released, the original DBX 165A® was a compressor unlike any other. Rather than the more traditional vacuum tube, it used a solid-state VCA to create its compression effect, and cutting-edge RMS dynamics detection. It also sounded great, which is the important thing!

These days, it’s getting harder and harder to find working originals, but their legendary sound-shaping power is still highly sought-after.
