Simple to Use

Trackspacer features a big centred knob that lets you set the amount of reduction applied in a simple and straightforward way, but it also features a set of parameters that let’s you go deep into how the signal is processed.

  • Pan: lets you choose exactly where you want to apply the effect. In default stereo mode you can select the left channel, right channel or anything in between.
  • M/S: in Mid / Side mode you can apply the effect to the mid-channel, the sides or anything in between.
  • Attack/Release: set how Trackspacer reacts to the incoming signal, making it smoother or punchier like a regular compressor plugin.
  • Sidechain: lets you listen to the incoming sidechain for easy tweaking of the low-cut and high-cut filters.

Not a Multi-band Compressor

Compressors react to the amplitude/volume/level of the audio signal on the track. Based on how loud the source signal is, they apply more or less compression.

Multi-band compressors split the signal in different bands and apply different settings on each band, but the detection is still the same as regular ones.

Trackspacer splits the sidechain source signal into 32 bands and analyses them individually. Then, it reverses the result and applies a 32 band EQ to duck (or carve) those exact same frequencies, giving the source track the space it needs to occupy in the mix… and all in real time!

That’s why the Trackspacer plugin is much better, more transparent and easier to use than regular compressors. It’s all in the detection!

Workflow

1 – Pull the middle circle down to increase the effect level. Smooth Operator automatically attacks the most dominant/fatigued frequencies first, even with a straight curve. You may not need to do more than this.

2 – Move the 4 outer nodes to shape the tonal response. Preserve frequency areas by moving the nodes up, or remove frequency content by pulling them down. Use your mouse wheel or trackpad scroll to adjust the Q.

3 – FOCUS controls how surgical Smooth Operator gets. At 100%, each frequency spike is processed independently. Lower focus values will give you a broader, more balanced, response.

4 – Engage SOLO to audition different parts of the frequency spectrum separately during node hover-over.

5 – Engage SIDE CHAIN mode to duck your signal with the frequency balance of another track in your mix. This feature could have been a plugin in its own right(!) It allows you to create a hyper-surgical side-chain effect where the exact frequency make-up of a lead track can be used for ducking a secondary track.

What is Spectral Processing?

The easiest way to understand Spectral Processing is to think of it as manipulating the building blocks that make up a digital signal – rather than the actual signal. BABY Audio’s algorithm uses Fast Fourier Transform – or FFT – to break the incoming audio into tiny particles, which are analyzed and processed separately, before being put back together again. This all happens in real-time and allows for a much more surgical approach to resonance detection and rebalancing than what would be possible with traditional audio effects.

While most spectral tools focus on audio restoration, BABY Audio wanted Smooth Operator to be all about creative expression. The plugin is meant for shaping your tone. Use it to compress, EQ and ‘purify’ in one simple process – and know that Smooth Operator has your back when it comes to automatically eliminating artefacts.

Overview

From subtle warmth to extreme drive and compression, PUNISH injects character and edge into any mix or instrument track. It’s the same PUNISH effect that you know and love, as featured in Heavyocity’s award-winning line of virtual instruments, now in VST/AU/AAX plugin format. Modeled after Heavyocity’s custom analog signal chains, PUNISH gives you control over Compression, Saturation, Transients, EQ, and Limiting. Chain the modules together to get that signature PUNISH sound, or isolate them to experience each dynamic effect on its own. And at the heart of it all is the global PUNISH Knob. Simply set your ranges, and dial in the devastation.

Compressor / Saturation

With three distinct compression models, the PUNISH Compressor offers a wide dynamic range, topped off with that classic analog warmth. The plugin features a smooth Class A-style Buss Compressor (Console), an aggressive, fat sound with a classic “knee” (Modern), and a warm vintage limiting amplifier-style (Classic). 

The PUNISH Saturation module also features three different models, all with their own unique brand of warmth, drive, and character. With a classic broadcast mic-pre (Vintage), a chunky harmonic saturation (Modern), and a fat tube saturation (Tube), the PUNISH Saturation module can add a bit of grit to a track, or drive the whole thing into overload.

Transients / EQ / Limiter

Providing control over the attack, sustain, and output gain, PUNISH’s Transient shaping module enables users to bring stronger transients back into the signal after saturating the sound. The module also features Hold control to determine length of the attack.

The EQ module is basic but powerful, offering lift of the high and low frequencies. Set the EQ to Pre or Post to affect highs and lows before the Comp, Sat, and Transient…or after.

To prevent clipping, PUNISH also features a Limiter at the end of the chain. Soft clip amount and release time controls are key, when that Saturation starts to get things truly hairy.

Global PUNISH Knob

At the core of the plugin is the central Punish Knob. Heavyocity has designed an intuitive way to modulate all of the parameters, quickly and easily bringing life and movement into your sounds. By simply clicking the “edit” button, and setting the halo values, the central PUNISH knob becomes a highly-dynamic tool, capable of any and every degree of PUNISHment. Think “Compressor”

Or Actually, do NOT Think “Compressor”

Well, except that this description would be completely inaccurate, as INTENSITY is absolutely NOT a compressor, and works in a completely different way. There’s no RMS detector, no threshold, no ratio, no attack or release time. It doesn’t pump or modulate in any other way. It doesn’t overshoot and it works regardless of absolute levels and input type.

That said, the compressor analogy does serve to give you an idea of when to use it and what for.

INTENSITY

At the heart of the plugin lies its namesake, the INTENSITY  circuit. A combination of advanced neural network based analysis and proprietary input and output transforms is used to separate the signal into broad strokes and detail features. By boosting the details while leaving the broad strokes in place, the sound’s unique characteristics are amplified, masking effects mitigated, details carved out, the density and perceived loudness increased. Sounds high tech? That’s because it IS.

BIAS

In most cases, the INTENSITY trackball is all you’ll need to use to get a great sound. But the processing amount can be controlled frequency dependently, too, using the BIAS function.

Preset BIAS Curves

INTENSITY features ten preset bias curves, including two equal loudness curves, a presence boost curve, linear tilt curves, and more. Curves are selected using our proprietary Visual Menu widget, which allows you to preview a setting simply by hovering your mouse over it.

SATURATE

TDR Kotelnikov is a wideband dynamics processor combining high fidelity dynamic range control with deep musical flexibility. As a descendant of the venerable TDR Feedback Compressor product family, Kotelnikov has directly inherited several unique features such as a proven control scheme, individual release control for peak and RMS content, an intuitive user interface, and powerful, state of the art, high-precision algorithms.

With a sonic signature best described as “stealthy”, Kotelnikov has the ability to manipulate the dynamic range by dramatic amounts, while carefully preserving the original tone, timbre and punch of a musical signal. As such, it is perfectly suited to stereo bus compression as well as other critical applications.

The “Gentleman’s Edition” (GE) adds several improvements to the standard edition’s feature set – the most obvious being intuitive access to various equal loudness workflows, the ability to specify ratio in a frequency-dependent manner, as well as a powerful sidechain high-pass filter allowing continuously variable access over slope and frequency. The Yin/Yang functions allow manipulating the harmonic pattern produced during compression, and a new “insane” quality mode increases processing fidelity even further.
