Swing the cutoff between two vowels to create formant-shaping effects on your dry signal. Modulate the cutoff (or the selected vowels themselves…) for distinct chorus and flanger effects. Works best with Comb or Bandpass combined on high resonance settings!

The vowels are: [i:] as in seat, [e] as in hen, [æ] as in fat, [y] as in tu (French), [ə] as in the, [ɑ] as in father, [ɔ] as in awe, [o] as in copy, and [u] as in boot.

There are four sources: an envelope follower with frequency detection, the LFO with 13 waveforms, a 16-step step sequencer and the Wobble Knob (lifted from our Cyclop synth).

Targets and intensity (bi-polar) are assigned in the circular elements at the foot of the modulation section – or you just right-click any parameter and assign a source – couldn’t be easier.

kHs Filter is a resonant filter with 7 modes, swiftly getting rid of frequencies you  don’t like or enhancing frequencies you do. And it’s doing it and doing it and doing it good.

What’s a Snapin?

This plugin is a “snapin”. That means you can use it as a regular VST/AU plugin, or you can use it with our snapin hosts Multipass and Snap Heap where you can combine effects in amazing ways.

Formant Filter

The Orb is a formant filter plugin which simulates the characteristics of the human voice. Featuring a set of three band pass filters, The Orb can transform any sound into a vowel-like formant-filtered sound. With the three LFOs you can modulate the Vowel, the Emphasis/Resonance of the formants, and the Drift, which can shift up or down the frequencies of each formant. You can also create your own set of vowels by changing name and frequency for each vowel/formant.

The Orb

Each sector of the orb represents a Vowel. It’s possible to change the vowel for each sector by clicking on the vowel name.

The distance from the center of the orb to the dot represent the amount of Emphasis (resonance) for each formant filter.

The angle inside each sector represent the amount of Drift, which is a value in Hz that will be added or subtracted from each vowel formant.

Custom Vowels

Clicking on the Edit button in the Vowels section, you can access the Custom Vowels window.

It’s possible to change each vowel name and frequency for the three formants.

Each custom vowels set will be saved in a preset (or DAW session), so you can create as many as you want by saving to a new preset.

The default set is the same as the Male genre settings.

The Comb Filter hollows out the sound by carving out frequencies at each multiple of the base frequency, like the teeth of a comb.

It’s also possible to process left and right differently in a way that not only gives a wide stereo effect, but also collapses right back to the original signal when mixed to mono. Nifty!

In the 1920s guitar players were fascinated by the “wa wa wa” sound made by trumpet players by opening and closing their mutes. Its filtering effect alters the resonance of the instrument and it feels to increase the expressiveness of playing.

FabFilter Simplon is a simplified version of FabFilter Volcano 2 with two independent multimode filters providing low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass responses with 12/24/48 dB/octave slopes. The filters can be used in serial or parallel mode.

FabFilter Simplon

Originally developed for FabFilter One, Simplon’s filters were designed from the ground up to be the fattest and smoothest self-oscillating digital filters possible. Simplon’s filters sound raw but never cheap or ‘digital’, even at full resonance.

Each filter offers three different filter characteristics that define the unique sound and overdrive of the filter. They range from smooth filters with moderate overdrive to raw, self-oscillating over-the-top madness!

In combination with the response and slope settings, FabFilter Simplon offers up to 27 different filter types.

Tweak the filters with Simplon’s large interactive filter display that shows both filter curves and lets you drag them around. You can adjust the filters separately or both at the same time.

MFilter is a specifically altered version of our MEqualizer with four global modulators which are able to provide effects such as wah-wah, sweeps, etc., but MFilter goes much further than you could ever imagine with standard effects.

The most advanced, adaptable filter of its era

In 1984, audio and electronics legend Tom Oberheim developed a groundbreaking subtractive, analog polyphonic synthesizer; a brave move when the digital synth revolution was taking the industry by storm. Standing the test of time, his brainchild instrument is now considered a classic, and our emulated version takes pride of place in V Collection. One of the main reasons it turned heads in the 80s was its audacity, the sheer power of its signal routing options, and its multi-mode filter.

The original synthesizer’s filter employed a single filter per voice, but provides no fewer than 15 different filter modes. This included Low Pass and three High Pass modes, two Band Pass modes, a Notch filter, and a Phase Shift mode. It also included another 4 modes, combining 1-Pole Low Pass filters with other modes. This unique selection of filter options is largely responsible for the immense power and scope of the fabled Matrix sound.

“But what does a filter actually do?”

For many music producers and electronic musicians, filters are an essential part of their sound and creative process. Put simply, filters cut or boost certain sound frequencies, letting you control the tonal ‘shape’ of audio.

For example, if you had a vocal recording that you wanted to remove some low, bassy rumbles from, you could use a high-pass filter.

A low-pass filter could be used in the same way, but to remove unwanted high frequencies; maybe to tame particularly zingy cymbals or hi-hats in a drum recording.

Notch filters can pinpoint certain frequencies and either boost or cut them; one great use for these is to find and remove clothy, unwanted mid-range resonance from recordings of acoustic instruments.

Originally developed to remove broadcast noise and make the most of radio bandwidth, nowadays filters are an essential creative tool for music professionals.

Dynamic EQ

DeeQ lets you adjust the frequency, gain, and Q value of the filter dynamically, either from the incoming audio, or from an external sidechain. You can apply a pre-filter EQ to the detector to only respond to specific frequencies, letting you truly have control of the sound.

Sidechain Detection

Using sidechain detection you can dynamically sculpt your audio using another audio channel as the source. For example, you can automatically remove mid range frequencies when the vocal is playing, or remove the sub bass when the kick hits.

There are many filter plugins on the market today but the FiltR Bank Pro is different! It contains two modules allowing endless sound sculpting. The first module seen on the left of the plugin is the heart of the Filter Bank Pro and contains five individual filters. Each of these filters features a Gain control for cutting or boosting, a frequency control for selecting which frequency to filter (1-12,000hZ!), and finally a Q control which narrows or widens the frequency bands being filtered.

The result is a different take on transient shaping or, when used at extreme settings, an effect capable of shaping the sounds in ways you didn’t know you wanted to do. Boomy kicks, snappy hihats, synthetic wet basses or just a sweet utility to shape your signal’s peaks and crest factor. The choice is yours!

27. Intellijel Korgasmatron II

Taking inspiration from a classic Japanese synth, Intellijel Korgasmatron II is a dual voltage controlled filter which can also be used as a limited oscillator. It has a completely independent six mode filter on each side. The filters can be blended to taste with the Xfade knob. Korgasmatron II is an add-on module for use with Modular.

While Korgasmatron II takes its name from a classic Japanese synth released in the early 80s, it’s far from a clone. Korgasmatron II offers much more grit and flexibility than its predecessor.

Korgasmatron II has a completely independent six mode filter output on each side which are selected via a rotary switch. It also has a special overdrive feature that enables the output signal to be soft or hard clipped depending on hard you drive the input signal. This is controlled via the input amp which starts clipping when you put the knob past 12 o’clock (assuming an standard 10 Vpp waveform). The hard/soft clipping differences are subtle on simple waveforms sources and dramatic on more complex sources (such as chords).

Just like the original hardware, the Intellijel Korgasmatron II can go from clean and precise to howling and agressive, from classic MS-20 type sounds to totally new territory, all depending on how you tweak the front panel controls.

Malfunction is a “circuit-bent” filter – a filter with intentionally broken connections and erroneous math that produces very special, hissy and screaming distortion. Mutronics Mutator creates mind boggling filter sweep effects on any sound source – guitars, vocals, keyboards, drums, etc. Mutator is essentially a super sweet stereo analog filter and an envelope follower, based on technology developed for analog synthesis in the 1960s. It’s fair to say that The Mutator is more of a creative tool than purely a mix tool.

Mutronics Mutator was an instant success when it came out in the early 1990’s and had an enormous impact of the sound from that decade. The Mutator can clearly be heard on records created by artists such as Radiohead, Beck, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack and many more.

But the Mutator was short lived. Production ceased abruptly when a vital component was discontinued by the component manufacturer. The original has since then only been available at auction sites, often at prices much higher than the original purchase price. Softube has worked closely with Mutronics to ensure that the plug-in captures every delicate detail of the original hardware.

What is the Mutator? 

Mutator has an analog voltage controlled filter (VCF) for each of its two channels, which can create synth-like filter sweeps on any sound source that is fed into the unit. The filter can be controlled from a number of sources, for example the envelope follower, which sweeps the filter in proportion to the amplitude of the sound source. In Gate mode, the filter is either on or off, and the filter can also be controlled by the on-board LFOs. These have four waveforms, which create filter sweeps in our out of time with the music.

Another very cool option is to use the external sidechain input, to have an external sound source control the filter movements. For example, insert the Mutator on a pad track and have the filter move in sync with a drum loop. You can also link or unlink the two channels for trippy stereo effects, use the Width control to extend the stereo field and use the Mix knob to blend in the original sound source with the mutated sound.
