3. Noize + FREE Slappy

by denise

Noize + FREE Slappy

Jamie Boyle (JNB) won the 2018 Denise plugin contest. We felt inspired to create the best possible adaptive noise generator plugin out there based on his idea.

Features

  • A switch to generate noise that adapts to the volume of your track, in real time.
  • Ability to solo the noise signal in order to apply additional effects like a bit crusher and flanger.
  • Full control of the noise envelope by tweaking the rise and fall time.
  • Five noise types: White, Brown, Violet, Pink and Blue.
  • Extremely low CPU usage.

The Noize plugin is a versatile tool for subtly enriching overly clean digital sounds like basses and synths, or for adding presence and character to beats, lead-instruments and build-ups. Noize offers five distinctive noise types and uses an advanced adaptive algorithm to shape your noise of choice to the volume envelope your track, as if it were part of it in the first place. You can tweak the responsiveness of the adaptive noise with the rise and fall controls, as well as control the stereo width of the noise and apply additional high pass and low pass filtering. In addition, you can solo the noise signal, which allows you to apply other effects to just the adaptive noise. The Denise Noize plugin gives you endless possibilities to enrich and enhance your tracks with ease, while being extremely friendly on your CPU.

Use Cases

1. “You like the sound of a particular synth, virtual instrument or sample library, but it has an overly clean and digital character.” Many virtual instruments and sample libraries sound overly clean because they are heavily pre-processed. The Denise Noize plugin lets you quickly add adaptive noise to these sounds making them sound more natural and easier to place in your mix. By soloing the noise, you can apply additional effects to just the adaptive noise signal, fully shaping it to your taste.

2. “You are mixing a beat or percussive element, and even though you have tried equalisation, transient shaping and compression, you feel like it is missing presence and power.” If processing plugins don’t seem to help to revive a beat or percussive element, this is often a sign that the source lacks these qualities altogether. You can use the Denise Noize plugin to add adaptive noise to these elements, either adding character and power, or lengthening the element’s tail.

3. “You are creating a big build-up in your track to increase tension, but it sounds weak and fails to create the intended engagement with the listener.” It can be difficult to create a build-up that sounds both natural, as well as powerful and engaging. With the Denise Noize plugin and automating the Rise and Fall, ad HPF and LPF features, you can create an additional layer of adaptive noise that can push your build-up to the next level.

System Requirements

  • OSX: VST, VST3, AU, AAX
  • Windows: VST, VST3, AAX

6. Noize 2 + FREE Slappy

by denise

Noize 2 + FREE Slappy

What is Noize?

Producer Jamie Boyle from Sweden won denise’s 2018 plugin contest. Based on his idea, denise created an adaptive noise generation plugin that takes noise generation to the next level. Noise is a secret weapon used by many professional producers to enhance and flavour their tracks: for example by making digital samples and synths sound more natural, adding grit and power to bass-synths, leads and paths, and adding character and sustain to drums and beats. It turned out a huge success and almost a year later, after gaining lots of users and feedback, denise now introduces the Noize 2.0.

What is Noize 2?

The Noize 2.0 introduces three new noise types and the option to load and edit your own noise profiles – features that have often been requested by the community. When denise actually tested the plugin, it turned out even more creative and versatile than they could anticipate. For example, they found out using a reversed vocal sample on drums and rhythmical synths has a surprisingly great effect.

Features

  • A switch to generate noise that adapts to the volume of your track, in real time.
  • Load and edit your own noise samples.
  • Choose between 8 types of noise and apply additional filtering.
  • Mute the original audio to isolate the noise signal and apply additional effects.
  • Optimize the behaviour of the noise by tweaking the rise and fall time.
  • Additional plugins that compliment the Noize: Bite and Space Invader.
  • Low CPU load.

How do you use Noize 2?

There are many ways to use adaptive noise to enhance your tracks. Working strictly in-the-box, you can use Noize 2.0 to add power and aggressiveness to tight bass-lines, add analog flavour to pads, lead-synths and percussion loops, create vintage sounding vocal parts and manipulate the attack and sustain of any element in you mix. If you are working on studio recordings instead, you can use Noize 2.0 to add width and depth to cleaned-up drum and percussion parts, add rome-tone from scratch and enhance the presence of guitars, strings and vocals.

Noize 2.0 makes this all very easy. Load Noize 2.0 on a track, and mix in your favourite kind of noise with the adaptive mode turned on. You can then use the rise, fall, hpf, lpf and stereo features to tweak the behaviour and flavour of the adaptive noise. Using custom samples and combining the Noize 2.0 with additional effects, such as bit crushing, flanging, tap-delay and reverb, gives you many more ways of adding a creative touch to your music. To facilitate this, Noize 2.0 has a solo option that mutes the source signal so you can route the generated adaptive noise signal to an effects bus for adding any effects you like.

The real question is: when NOT to use noise.

7. RAW-Kick

by Rob Papen

RAW-Kick

RAW-Kick is a product developed in conjunction with DJ Free-K and DJ Promo. Based on the legendary RAW synthesizer, RAW-Kick includes neat features and focus specifically designed for today’s demanding producers!

RAW-Kick offers three individual layers to design and build up your Kick drum sound, which is a common method often used by producers. But now, instead of using three separate products, you can use this method within one product. Each layer offers two modes. You can select a dedicated kick synthesizer model or use a sample-based layer. The ‘Kick Model’ type offers some new and unique features, for instance, the RAW amount. You can also control the harmonics which can have a firm impact on the sound, especially in combination with the many included distortion FX on board.

The ‘Sample’ type also has to offer some neat features like a multi-mode analogue modelled filter, two EQ sections and many FX algorithms with several types of distortion and other top-quality FX.

Loopcloud Music App from Loopmasters.com

The Master section of RAW-Kick finishes it all off with an additional double EQ section and the MONO/STEREO FX to make your kick tight in its low end and wide in the mid/high range of the spectrum!

The Master section also offers you some neat control over all three layers at once, for speeding up your workflow creating the perfect RAW-Kick!

Industrial Strength Samples have created an Expansion for Raw-Kick which can be found on Loopmasters.

10. Noize Retro + FREE Slappy

by denise

Noize Retro + FREE Slappy

Noise is a secret weapon used by many professional producers and sound designers to enhance and flavour their tracks and sound effects. Noise can be used in many ways, for example:

  • Making digital samples and synths sounds more natural.
  • Adding character and sustain to drums, beats and percussive elements.
  • Adding grit and power to bass-synths, leads and paths.
  • Making vocal recordings sound vintage.
  • Adding an aggressive layer to a built-up section or riser.

If you want to know how the Noize Retro can improve your mixes, listen to these audio examples created by producer nrec. The first two examples come from the 2019 album The Fire by the New York based artist Kendra Black. It showcases how to use the Noize Retro adaptive mode to enhance a snare drum in a modern EDM production. The third example uses a track by nrec himself called Dust and showcases both the Noize Retro and the Space Invader used on a snare drum and synth. Check it out!

What makes the denise Noize different?

Swedish producer Jamie Boyle won the denise 2018 plugin contest. Based on his idea, denise created a plugin that takes noise generation to the next level:

  • A switch to generate noise that adapts to the volume of your track, in real time.
  • Mute the original audio to isolate the noise signal and apply additional effects.
  • Optimize the behaviour of the noise by tweaking the rise and fall time.
  • Choose between five types of noise and apply additional filtering.
  • Additional plugins that compliment the Noize: Bite and Space Invader.
  • Low CPU load.

What is special about the Noize Retro limited edition?

The Noize Retro is a limited edition version of the Noize plugin that features one unique adaptive noise type modelled after the noise produced by old-school Retro system boards, used for many popular Retro games since the 70s. The noise generated by Noize Retro sounds dark and gritty and has a lot more character than regular noise types like white noise. It can make all kinds of sounds – for example bass, drums, synths and vocals – sound retro and edgy, and enhance their presence in your mix.

How to apply adaptive Retro  noise in 5 steps:

  • Load the Noize Retro on your track.
  • Turn on the adaptive mode.
  • Mix in the adaptive noise.
  • Shape the noise behaviour with the rise and fall features.
  • Shape the noise sound with the hpf, lpf and stereo features.

Quadrant’s intuitive workflow and vast sonic potential will inspire you to push the envelope, while its flexible architecture invites you to try imaginative new routing scenarios.

160 factory patches were specially designed to showcase Quadrant’s capabilities both as an effects processor and sound generator. To take things even further, put Quadrant in a processing chain along with any of our other software tools. Generate vivid electronic tones or process your drums, synths, sound effects and hardware to explore endless possibilities.

At the heart of Quadrant, you will find a selection of modules you can freely configure by populating up to 8 slots. Once populated with a module, a slot will give you access to up to 4 input and output nodes, which you can freely connect via Quadrant’s virtual patch cables. Nodes are configured to have the ability to send and receive multiple signals at once, making very complex modulation scenarios possible. Quadrant ships with 36 modules ranging from oscillators to effects to utility, with additional modules planned for future updates.

Quadrant’s unique workflow and interface will change the way you think about modulation and signal processing. The plugin makes it possible to set up completely self-generating patches, making it equally capable as a sound generator and effects processor. Our designers have crafted a variety of external and internally generated effects patches to show what the plugin is capable of. Quadrant also includes a large modular synthesizer sample pack comprised of more than 1500 samples.

12. Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator

by Softube

Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator

This product is an expansion for Softube Modular. If you do not currently own Modular, you can purchase it HERE.

How twisted can things get? With Buchla 259e, the answer is—pretty twisted! This coveted dual oscillator module is the first-ever officially licensed plug-in version of a Buchla product. While the unit can be used for traditional synth patches, its unusual inner workings makes Buchla 259e excel at metallic, cold, harsh, digital and screeching sounds. Buchla 259e is an add-on module for use with Modular.

The Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator plug-in for Modular features all the digital waveshaping, aliasing noise and foldover frequencies of the original hardware. Enjoy the self-modifying, screeching, snarling responses from the original’s downright odd inner workings. The 259e is a unique addition to the Modular ecosystem.

What Is a Twisted Waveform Generator Anyways?

The 259e consists of two separate oscillators—Principal and Modulation—where Modulation can be used either to modulate the Principal oscillator or as a separate generator of audible notes. Furthermore, the sine wave generated by the Principal oscillator is simultaneously applied to two of the eight available waveshape tables. A morph voltage pans between the two tables and a warp voltage varies the amplitude of the sinusoidal (driving) waveform. Both these functions can be modulated by the Modulation oscillator.

Here’s Where it Gets Really Twisted

Three of the waveshape tables are actually not tables in the classical sense—they are simply portions of the 259e operating program, full of unpredictable noise and frequent silences. This is the innovative Mem Skew mode, possibly the most unique feature of the Buchla 259e. When these tables are selected, the FM controls are re-assigned to table scanning functions and the FM inputs become table modulators.

To sum it up, while the Buchla 259e can certainly be used for more traditional sounds, it excels at creating otherworldly twisted digital sonic landscapes. Which is why it is one of the most coveted synth modules on the market.

Features

  • Unique and desirable oscillator
  • Perfect for screeching, harsh and digital sounds
  • Can also be tamed to sound quite smooth and organic. Can morph smoothly between these softer sounds and the more in-your-face sounds
  • The digital parts are ported from the hardware line by line, the wavetables byte by byte, and the analog parts are modeled component by component
  • The first-ever officially licensed Buchla plug-in
  • Requires Modular

System Requirements

  • Mac OS X 10.12 or newer (older OS versions may work but are not tested (64-bit only).
  • Windows 64-bit, versions 7, 8 or 10 (64-bit only).
  • Intel Core 2 Duo, AMD Athlon 64 X2 or newer.
  • Screen resolution 1280×800 or larger.
  • Supported sample rates: 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz, in both mono and stereo.
  • 8 GB RAM or more is recommended, as well as at least 8 GB hard disk space for installation (individual plug-ins take less space, while sample libraries may require additional disk space).
  • A Softube account is required to register and install the software.
  • An iLok account is required for authorisation of the software.
  • Internet access for downloading installer and managing licenses.
  • iLok generation 2 and up, if you intend to use a physical iLok dongle for authorizing your plug-ins (note that an iLok dongle is not a requirement).
  • In theory, any 64-bit VST, VST3, AU, or AAX (11.0.2 or higher) compatible host application should work.
  • The most recent maintenance release of the DAW application is recommended.

However, due to plug-in host differences between DAWs – and our own rigorous testing standards – we only officially test our plug-ins and instruments in the most recent versions of Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Live, Studio One, Digital Performer, Reaper and Sonar. Softube plugins are not tested in the non-listed systems, but they most likely work as long as the system requirements are met. We cannot guarantee a solution for issues in unsupported systems.

  • Softube Modular is required to run this software.
  • Make sure that you always use the latest iLok License Manager. It is not included in the Softube installer but can be downloaded from www.ilok.com

13. Spinnin’ Records BASE

by Prolody

Spinnin' Records BASE

The balance between kick and bass is one of the most important aspects of dance music. Getting them to work together perfectly is a challenge for many beginning producers, and we have figured out a way to make it much, much, simpler:

BASE is a synthesizer that generates both a kick and a bass sound. They are linked in terms of volume, spectrum and timing so they work together perfectly in your mix.

Don’t be fooled by the simple interface: it’s optimized towards getting a good bassline as opposed to tweaking your sounds endlessly. Use the soundsets as your starting point and make some tracks!

Features

Sidechain

Change the timing of the bass through the sidechain slider from 1/64th note to dotted 8th note to go from almost simultaneous to super late. The sidechain is connected to your DAW’s tempo and can be normal notes, dotted and triplets.

Colour

Increase the bass presence through crunch and overtones with the color slider.

Length

Determines the note length from punchy short to infinite. Length is connected to your DAW’s tempo and can be normal notes, dotted and triplets.

Split MIDI and Split Audio

There are two extra control settings in the plugin: SPLIT MIDI and SPLIT AUDIO.

On the default setting SPLIT MIDI and SPLIT AUDIO are turned off, meaning both kick and bass are triggered on every midi event, with the kick synced to the note of the bass. This is great for when you just need a simple four to the floor bassline to get your track going.

SPLIT MIDI offers full flexibility in composing more fancy basslines by literally splitting the midi into three octaves: C-2 for sidechain, C-1 and 0 for kick and C1 and 2 for bass.

SPLIT AUDIO splits the audio into two mono tracks: one for the bass and the other for the kick. Allowing different processing and routing on each instrument.

Mix

The bottom slider determines the volume mix between kick and bass. 100% bass still uses the kick as sidechain information.

Output

Determines the output volume of the plugin

Soundsets

The meticulously crafted kick and bass soundsets are the core of what the plugin is about. Use the arrows to switch through them to get inspired, or click on the soundset name to open the menu: they’re organised by artist, genre and vibe. You can also combine a kick and a bass from different sets by clicking the LINK button.

System Requirements

Mac (64-bit only)

  • VST
  • AU

Windows (64-bit only)

  • VST

Important note: this software is 64-bit compatible only and will not function on 32-bit systems.

14. Noize 2 + Bite Bundle

by denise

Noize 2 + Bite Bundle

What is Noize?

Producer Jamie Boyle from Sweden won denise’s 2018 plugin contest. Based on his idea, denise created an adaptive noise generation plugin that takes noise generation to the next level (watch mini documentary).

Bite

Bruise, break and crush to get that LoFi house-techno, industrial and IDM sound, but with full control and an analog edge. Sink your teeth into our new plugin!

Features

  • Transitions continuously from 32-bit all the way down to 1-bit. For smooth automation with surgical precision.
  • Use the analog control to go from harsh and digital to subtle with a warm tone.
  • Full control over the frequency range you want to crush. Preserve the low end and color your sound.
  • Use on a bus of full mix with the link button to retain the stereo image.
