What is cyberpunk music?

Our team met for a few months and studied the soundtracks of over a dozen influential cyberpunk movies, shows, and games to inspire a new sample pack. Synthwave is the genre most commonly associated with cyberpunk, but we found that each popular release had its own sonic landscape. A clear example of this is the 1995 soundtrack to Ghost in the Shell, with its blend of traditional japanese instruments and synthesizers.

As we came to realize that the genre was only loosely defined, we began experimenting with a hybrid of our two favorite sounds — the warm analog synths of Vangelis and Hans Zimmer (via Blade Runner) with the dense, glitchy cybernetic melodies and percussive effects of Cyberpunk 2077.

To create the samples, our engineers leveraged ADSR’s AudioCipher plugin and turned Blade Runner character names into midi melodies.

Then we ran that MIDI through live analog synths at low, mid and high frequencies and recorded it in Ableton to achieve the signature sound of that series.

We also built over 100 glitchcore samples inspired by 2077, covering the full sonic spectrum and bringing the Blade Runner synths to life. Pitch-shift and beatmatch hyperspeed percussion with mind-bending bass rhythms. You’ll find there’s a collection of bonus melodies encoded with the names of main characters from 2077.
