1. Komplete Kontrol Software Overview

In this introduction to Native Instrument’s Komplete Kontrol, you will learn the basic software interface of Kontrol.

You will learn how to choose patches and sound by their character, type or function in Kontrol, and navigate the Kontrol software.

Additional topics in this video include Kontrol’s Library browser, saving Favorites, and choosing sounds within the Library. You will also examine Kontrol’s Expanded, Macro and Perform panels while earning the basics of Kontrol’s Scale and Arpeggiator tools.

Last, a technical overview of Kontrol discusses software preferences and Kontrol’s Audio/MIDI Settings window.

2. komplete Kontrol mk2 – Advanced Arpeggiator Features

In this video we cover the advanced features of the Komplete Kontrol’s arpeggiator smart-play feature such as:

Arp mode, Sequence, Swing, Hold, Gate, Gate Reset, Octave, Re-trigger, offset, repeat & inversion.

We then demonstrate how the Komplete Kontrol allows us to play arpeggios through a chord. Essentially this allows a user to create complex arpeggios from pressing just a single note.

3. Komplete Kontrol mk2 – Scale & Chord explained

In this video we explain the three different scale modes:

Easy mode – This maps the notes of the scale from C to C using only the white notes, irregardless of the scale you are in.

Guide mode – This maps the scale as expected. if you play a wrong note the note will be heard as normal

Mapped mode – This maps the scale as expected, however if you play a wrong note the komplete Kontrol will push that note into the scale that is set. This is extremely useful for live performances or producers who lack musical knowledge.

Next we cover the use of chord mode and how we can use the ‘chromatic’ scale to reveal more chords in the chord harmoniser mode.

We then cover more advanced functions such as inversions, chord sets and position.

We then record a pad sound and automate it in the arrangement view to see how the track progresses onto the next part of the arrangement.

• Using the browser to audition and load presets. In this case we edit a bass sound using native map and record it in session view
• Cycling through native and third party NKS presets to find a lead sound and harmonising it using the scale & chord smartplay performance controls
• Using functions such as undo/redo and quantise to edit & correct our performance on the fly
• Adding pads and arpeggiators using smartplay
• Launching clips & scenes in session view
• Recording session automation using native map
• Overdubbing automation
• Mixing on the fly with the balance & pan controls

configuring the midi preferences in Ableton

9. Komplete Kontrol mk2 – Creating Call & Response Patterns Using Komplete Kontrol’ Smart-play Features

We can use the sequence, repeat, re-trigger and offset advanced arpeggiator buttons to force percussion instruments to create rhythmical call & response patterns on the fly.

This can be helpful for adding a sense of ambiguity to our performances and help to break up our loops.

This call & response technique is used across multiple genres but is very prevalent in techno where it is used to maintain a listeners interest whilst the beat is driven by a straight beat.

10. Kontrol S Hardware Function Overview

In this tour of the Kontrol S hardware, you’ll learn the basic functions and control of the Kontrol S keyboard and using it with Komplete Kontrol.

Topics include a step by step walkthrough of the various keyboard controls, selecting patches with the Kontrol Browser from the keyboard, and an overview Kontrol Macros, Scale and Arpeggiator functions on the hardware.

11. Kontrol Chord & Harmonizer Modes

In this tutorial for the Kontrol S keyboards, we explore the Kontrol keyboard Chord and Harmonizer functions.

You will learn how to use the Harmonizer to automatically build chord stacks on top of single notes – from octaves, fourths or fifth to larger stacks including triads, seventh chords, quartals and more.  You’ll also learn how Chord Mode lets you play full chord progressions from single keys on the keyboard, allowing you to build complex chord progressions that work together automatically.

12. Komplete Kontrol mk2 – Creating & Modulating Techno Hats with Note Repeat

In this video we use the smartplay functions on the komplete kontrol mk2 to create techno hat patterns.

• Utilising the note repeat and arpeggiator for hats instead of standard chords is an interesting way of coming up with new and unusual patterns that we would not usually think of without the help of the Komplete Kontrol.

• We can add further interest to the sound by assigning modulation sources from within the software. This can be achieved by a range of different modulation possibilities such as aftertouch, pitch bend, modulation wheel, the touch strip or velocity.
