Extract:Dialogue

Dialogue Noise Reduction

Extract:Dialogue is a plug-in that separates dialogue from common types of background noise such as wind, rustle, traffic, hum, clicks and pops. The algorithm works in real-time and is based on deep learning.

It has been trained on thousands of high-quality voice recordings and an equally extensive set of common noise sources.

The extensive training enables the artificial intelligence to automatically distinguish dialogue from noise without user interaction. This makes Extract:Dialogue extremely easy to use – just add it to your dialogue bus and let it do its magic.

Even though the noise reduction is fully automatic, the plug-in interface does offer simple controls to adjust the sensitivity of the noise detection and the maximum noise attenuation. The sensitivity can even be adjusted independently in up to three frequency bands. The maximum attenuation control is very handy when you only want to reduce the noise without removing it completely. All the parameters are fully automatable as you would expect.

MAIN FEATURES

Type A

Type A is a plugin inspired by a famous vintage tape encoder. The original unit was designed to be a noise reduction system for tape recording (encode stage) and playback (decode stage).

Type A emulates the encode stage, which was often misused as an enhancer, dynamically increasing the top end of a signal without introducing artefacts or altering the harmonic content. The results are similar to a dynamic EQ which adds presence and air to any track in a natural way.

FEATURES:

  • Vintage Enhancer
  • Multi-band Compressor with 4 Bands
  • Adjustable Unit Noise
  • Oversample up to 16x
  • Resizable Window
  • Preset system with randomizer

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

You can show/hide the drop-down panel by clicking on the arrow icon in the bottom left corner of the interface.

You’ll get access to:

  • Volume for each band
  • Compressor Attack and Release
  • Noise volume
  • VU-Meter source selector

HOW DOES IT WORK?

To limit the amount of noise generated by tape recording, early noise reduction systems used what’s called a multi-band compander (compressor/expander). The unit dynamically emphasizes the high frequencies during the encoding stage (recording to tape), so that during the decoding stage (playback from tape) the signal is attenuated, along with the typical tape noise. Type A emulates the encoding stage only.

The input signal is split into 4 bands (with the highest bands overlapping), dynamically compressed and then summed back with the dry signal. The amount of compression on each band is inversely proportional to the volume of the band. Quieter sounds get brighter while louder sounds remain almost unchanged.

This adds brightness and air without generating any new harmonic content or distortion, resulting in a more pleasant and natural enhancer compared to a typical exciter.

NOISE REDUCTION OR ENHANCER?

Introduced in 1966 with the Dolby A301 first, and then in 1970 with the Dolby 361 (with the CAT 22 card, in photos), the A-Type noise reduction was quickly misused and modded by engineers to enhance their recordings by using the encoding stage only.

The most common mod consists in disabling the two lower bands so that only the high-frequency portion of the signal is compressed, giving even more air to vocals.

This technique was labeled with many names like the Vocal Trick, Stretch Mod, Vocal Stressor, and even the “John Lennon mod”.

PC:

  • Windows 7, 8, 10
  • 2GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM
  • VST2, VST3, or AAX (64-bit)

MAC:

  • OS X 10.9 – macOS 11 Big Sur

Oxford DeClicker

Oxford DeClicker

Accurately and transparently remove pops, clicks and crackle using three discrete sections. Each has a threshold and sensitivity control to define the number of events that are detected and removed. The unique Events Graph shows the level and duration of each pop, click and crackle as it’s detected in three separate colour-coded groups.

Sometimes there will be events detected that represent audio we want to keep rather than remove. So we built the Exclude Box to further refine the number of repaired events, and also Dialogue Mode for independent control over speech in programme.

Restoration Suite 2

Acon Digital Restoration Suite consists of four audio restoration and noise reduction plug-ins that are the result of several years of research within the field of noise reduction and audio restoration algorithms:

  • DeNoise is a plug-in designed to reduce stationary noise, such as broadband noise, hiss, wind noise, buzz and camera noise. Great efforts have been put into preserving as much of the original signal as possible during the noise reduction process. As a result, DeNoise can reduce or in many cases completely remove the noise in a very transparent manner without loss of transients, attacks or “air” in the recording.
  • DeHum targets hum and buzz typically introduced by poorly grounded electrical equipment, but also other tonal noise sources like electrical motor noise.
  • DeClick is designed to remove impulsive noise such as clicks, crackle, plosives and thumps. These distortions are frequently encountered on LP and 78 RPM records, but also occur in digital recordings when recording voice without pop shield or due to drop-outs or distorted data packets.
  • DeClip restores audio recordings distorted by analog or digital clipping.

Acon Digital Restoration Suite is available in 32 and 64 bit versions, as VST or AAX for both Windows and OS X or as AU plug-ins for OS X.

DeFilter

DeFilter is an efficient tool to even out tonal imbalances in a recording or reduce resonant peaks or dips in the frequency spectrum. Even severe issues such as comb filter effects or standing waves from untreated rooms can be addressed. DeFilter can match recordings to target profiles such as music or speech, or alternatively extract the overall timbre from the source – the large strokes – while evening out narrow peaks and dips. The latter removes resonances and comb filter effects effectively while preserving the tonal character of the input signal. Recordings can also be equalized to match a reference recording. Great care has been taken to provide a user interface that is straightforward to use. Frequency dependent correction levels can be defined using custom curves, so that DeFilter can focus on problematic frequency ranges while leaving other frequency regions untouched. Realtime spectrum analyzers for both the input and output signals visualize the effect on the frequency spectrum. Use Cases

  • Fix issues in a mix prior to mastering
  • Reduce resonances caused by untreated room acoustics
  • Matched equalization (automatic equalization based on a reference signal)
  • Improve clarity and intelligibility of speech
  • Instant fix for nasty comb filter effects

Acon Digital DeFilter is available for both Windows (PC) and OS X (Macintosh). Both 32 and 64 bit versions are available, and the plug-in formats VST, AAX and Audio Units (OS X only) are supported.

Brusfri

An advanced audio noise reducer with a simple and straightforward interface

Brusfri is a highly advanced audio noise reducer, packed into a simple and straightforward interface. It is very well suited for cleaning up noisy audio recordings while retaining sound quality.

Unlike many other noise reducers on the market, Brusfri doesn’t mess with audio phasing to suppress noise (a technique that often comes with audible side effects). Instead, multiple fine-tuned gates are used to silence unwanted noise.

  • 1. Attack / Threshold / Release – These parameters control all the internal expanders relatively.
  • 2. Learn Button – Brusfri needs some noise to be analysed. Most of the time, this is the only thing that’s needed. Push and hold to feed audio data and create a noise profile.
  • 3. Tonality – Most of the time, Brusfri does a good job in creating a noise profile that works as expected, but in some cases (especially when there’s heavy noise involved) one needs to tweak a bit.

What is that noise?!

Can we shut down the vent system for the whole building, please?

You know the feeling when you just have recorded the best take ever for your new creation and it’s time to edit when you realise there’s a constant hiss in the background interfering with the performance. It happens to us all, whether you’re working with music, film, podcasts or radio, unwanted noise is a problem that pops up now and then. With the improvement of sound quality over the years, what was once hidden behind tape hiss can now be audible and bothersome and we need noise reduction to tackle it.

Features

  • Several frequency-trimmed expanders build an intelligent noise suppressor
  • No phase-altering, which leaves the desired sound untouched (no squishy artifacts as in many other noise reducers)
  • Intuitive and unique user interface
  • macOS 10.10 or later (optimized for the M1-processor)
  • Windows 7 SP1 or later
  • AU, VST-2, VST-3, AAX
