News (Update) : D16 - Decimort 2 is on it's way !

Some fresh news from Poland D16 Group !

Decimort 2 is coming with very great new features for bit crushing addicts.

Katowice, Poland: D16 Group Audio Software releases new version of a well acclaimed effect plug-in from SilverLine Collection series – Decimort 2 – and discontinues version 1.2

Two optional anti-alias filters
A very steep low-pass pre filter (Approximative Filter) coupled with the resampling frequency that removes all harmonic content above it, ensuring no aliasing will appear below this frequency in the spectrum. A further post filter (Image filter), also synchronized with the resampler, gives control over amount of aliasing images appearing above resampling frequency when enabled.

Adjustable Jitter
Feature which introduces short-period, random fluctuations to the resampling frequency, producing different then downsampling type of harmonic distortion.

Two quantization methods
Two available quantization methods; the mid-raiser and mid- treat decimation algorithms, each of them characterized by a drastically different dynamics response.

Controllable dithering
Dithering was conceptually developed as means for reducing the audible quantization errors by masking the harmonic distortions they cause. Controllable dithering allows to increase number of ways in which sound can be (mal)treated.

Decimor is part of the SilverLine Collection from D16 Group.

4. Free Online Roland Boutique Editor/Patch Librarian

Free Online Roland Boutique Editor/Patch Librarian

Another great WEB MIDI tool this time for Roland Boutique synthesizers owners.

There are two editors available, one for the Roland Boutique JU-06 and one for the Roland Boutique JP-08.

Roland Boutique JU-06 Editor/Patch librarian features

Bi directional communication with your Roland Boutique JU-06 using Sysex (Important! please see below for setting it up)

Precision editing of all parameters.

Use the sliders of your JU-06, the sliders on the web page or enter the exact value for a parameter manually (you will notice that the sliders on the JU-06 in itself are quite inexact so an editor like this is necessary for serious patch making)

When you change patch or press Manual on your JU-06 the patch is automatically uploaded to the editor

See parameters and learn from your favorite factory presets

Easy access of important features like the Delay, Portamento and Bend Range

You can save your patches if you log in using a Google Account (see the FAQ below for more information about this)

A public patch browser utility is planned once we have gathered a number of patches that users are willing to share

11. MAX 7 is Patching Reimagined.

Cycling ’74 just updated Max to 7.1, what’s new?

Max 7.1 brings a lot of interesting innovations. A major update to the leading software brand Cycling ’74.

Now with a new interface optimized for speed and simplicity, major performance improvements, and a collection of powerful new tools to realize your ideas faster than ever.

What’s new in Max 7.1?

Package Manager

Get instant access to Max object libraries and system enhancements using the new Package Manager. Found in the File menu, this simple interface provides access to new content while allowing you to manage your existing installed packages.

The available content will be continuously updated with curated contributions from Cycling ’74 and the community.

Snapshots Extended

An updated Snapshot system now allows you to save the state of the entire patcher, not just hosted plugins. You can now instantly create, recall, rename and edit your snapshots using the new Snapshot pane on the right toolbar.

Collections

A collection is Max’s version of a playlist and can be made up of files that fit a certain criteria (for example, all audio files from 2011, back when audio files sounded better) or a simple list of things you want to organize.

One powerful feature of collections is that unlike previous versions, files in a collection can live anywhere on your computer, and you don’t have to understand or manage search paths. Just drag a file or folder into the file browser and it’s available for use in your patches.

Tags and Searches

Use the File Browsers to find all patchers you’ve tagged with keywords. For more sophisticated queries, the File Browser has an easy to use search syntax.

There is still much to discover on the site of Cycling ’74, the improvements are present in most of the Max functions.

12. Advanced Audio Level Shaping (Audio Unit)

Advanced Audio Level Shaping (Audio Unit)

A new tool for advanced audio level shaping with no less than 32 envelopes generators, variable timing and shape parameters.

This new tool should appeal to sound designers and experimental musicians.

Inertia is an effect for advanced audio level shaping. It is based on a sequencer that runs in precise sync with the host transport, triggering up to 32 envelope generators one after another. With multiple envelope types to choose from, as well as variable timing and shape parameters, Inertia can create a plethora of level modulation effects: from rhythmic tremolo, pumping and gating to really intricate riffs, chopping and stuttering.

Inertia displays a live audio waveform and aligns its sequencer graphics with it – exactly in the same way it’s done by the sound engine, for true “what you see is what you get” operation. Every element in its user interface is color-coded and features subtle animations, bringing unusual ease of use and interactivity. Plus, all this goodness is rendered right on your Mac’s graphics adapter meaning fast response and no extra load on the main processor, regardless of how new or old your system is.

SOUND ENGINE

– Sequencer with up to 32 steps, variable duration, division and swing ratio.
– Multi-envelope generator offering 11 envelope types, variable time and lag.
– Eight parameter snapshots within each preset, available for realtime switching and automation.
– Host transport synchronization with support for tempo and time signature changes.

GRAPHIC INTERFACE

– Live input audio waveform and fluid sequencer graphics visually matched to it.
– Support for multi-touch gestures and force touch on compatible trackpad devices.
– Fully hardware-accelerated rendering with support for Retina screen resolution.

COMPATIBILITY

– Works with any application that supports Audio Unit effect plugins.
– Supports OS X 10.6 or later running on 32 or 64 bit Intel Macs.

13. eaReckon EAREVERB 2

A new reverb plugin ! Looks nice but does it sounds good ?

EAReverb 2 is a 100% algorithmic reverb plug-in (32/64-bit VST2, VST3, AU, AAX).

It features the “Natural” core engine of the original EAReverb but also brings a plethora of new algorithms and functionalities accessible from a totally revised user interface.

Compared to the former EAReverb which focuses on simulating natural environments, EAReverb 2 can then be considered as a more holistic answer to your reverb needs.

SIX DIFFERENT ALGORITHMS

Natural (XXS>XTREM):

Formerly conceived for the original EAReverb, this algorithm provides smooth and natural results by avoiding metallic artefacts and by offering an adjustable level of subtle randomness in the late reverb.

Bright:

Compared to “Natural”, using Bright is like adding carbon dioxide to source water.

Just consider high frequencies as bubbles and you will get the idea of what can be obtained from this algorithm.

Alu Box:

This one provides a tamed and metallic sounding reverb as what you might expect from a spacecraft or an empty metal tank.

Auditorium:

Auditorium is the most extended version of the original EAReverb core algorithm. It offers a wide range of possibilities from natural to artificial results.

It features “bright” and (perceived) “distance” parameters.

Plate:

A mono to stereo algorithm featuring bright and modulated characteristics of some classic high quality reverb units.

Reverse:

A synchronisable reverse algorithm that provides the “whoosh” effect some are in quest of.

THREE OPERATION MODES

PRO Mode: gives access to all parameters and modules.

SE Mode: a limited but easy and fast alternative interface to the PRO mode.

POS Mode: provides specific tools that will help you to dynamically set the location of incoming sounds in the space simulated by EAReverb 2.

And there is much more to discover about this new plugin… A clear and very modern user interface, many functions to sculpt your ambiences and a ton of tiny details to control everything you can imagine.

So, is this new reverb plugin a good one ? From all the technical specifications it is undoubtedly a good tool for sound research. From the audio clips, it is sounding good but everyone tastes aren’t the same, you’ll be the only judges.

In this category of accessible plugins, EAREVERB should meet its targeted audience without much difficulties.

14. Spektro Audio Modular Sample Recorder

Spektro Audio Modular Sample Recorder

A free standalone app (OS X) to record samples from your modular synthesizer.

Quite a useful tool if you’re planing to make a collection of sounds from your modular synthesizer.

I made this project for myself but, since a couple of friends showed some interested, I thought I’d share it with you guys.

This is a super simple standalone app (only Mac for now) made in Max and it serves a single purpose: record one shots samples from the modular.

It works by sending triggers to 2 selectable outputs of your interface (which should be connected to an ES-3 or similar) and immediately recording a signal coming from a selectable input (I might add an option, in the future, to start recording based on amplitude so you can trigger your modular externally).

You can also define for how long it’ll record the sample (default is 1000ms).

After you record the sample, you can crop it and export it as an audio file.

It may sound a lil bit complicated but, once you get the hang of it, you can start recording and exporting tons of samples really fast.

15. Pro Tools First – Pro Tools Free

Pro Tools is well know in pro studios. Now, you have the chance to install it into your computer…

Want to make great sounding music?

Start off right using many of the same tools the pros use—absolutely free.

Pro Tools | First is simple enough for beginners, yet sophisticated for experienced musicians, enabling you to quickly compose, record, edit, and mix music. Entry to the industry’s most trusted audio workstation has never been easier.

Play and practice your heart out

New to making music ? Pro Tools | First is a great place to hang out, play, and practice your favorite instrument or improve your vocal abilities.

Choose from a selection of session templates, which provide preloaded instrument tracks, and start creating a song in a variety of music genres, including EDM, rock, pop, jazz, and hip-hop.

Record yourself with ease

Whether you sing, play an instrument, or simply want to make some noise, Pro Tools | First makes it easy to quickly turn the ideas in your head into fully realized songs.

Record up to 16 audio tracks, either one at a time through your computer’s audio input, or up to four inputs simultaneously using a USB audio interface, making it easy to capture your vocal and guitar, multiple vocalists, or quick-n-dirty band jam session.

Use loop recording to capture multiple takes of a performance, so you can nail that perfect guitar solo or let your spontaneity rule.

Compose your own music

No instrument? No problem. Create musical parts with virtual instruments (VIs), plug-in software that generates instrument sounds on your computer—anything from beats and loops, to guitars, bass, and more cowbell.

With the included Xpand!2 music synthesizer, you have an incredible range of instruments at your fingertips—from acoustic pianos, strings, brass, percussion, and woodwinds, to electronic synths, guitars, drums, basses, sound effects, and more.

Use the MIDI Editor to write and edit notes, perfect virtual instrument performances, and modify how loud and soft notes play to give your music more dynamics and emotion across up to 16 instrument and 16 MIDI tracks.

With Elastic Pitch and Elastic Time, you can make bum notes sound pitch perfect and fix timing inconsistencies—without sounding like a chipmunk… or Sylvester Stallone.

Avid had a nice idea to provides Pro Tools First for free… It will most likely introduce new customers to their brand and maybe a future loyal user base who will want more than this quite limited version.

Of course, we’re far away from Pro tools HD integrated systems that worth thousands of dollars but to educate young producers with a calling product like this one is certainly a model we’ll see more and more since the war between digital audio workstations has slowly but surely started already.
