How it works

Urban Puncher is an effect that gives a “punch” to your percussive material (drums, percussion). Intended for drum loops but works instantly on anything that you can call drum hit. Your loops will step out of the shadows immediately. Urban Puncher delivers a stronger and more solid feel in no time.

How to use it?

Urban Puncher is a definitive drum improving tool for any urban music producer. It doesn’t matter much if you can put it on your drum channel after or before your EQ or comp. Simply dial how strong the punch your tracks get should be and mix it with the original sound and let Urban Puncher do its magic.

Punch

What is a “Punch”? There’s not a simple answer to that. The punch knob controls several processes at the same time. It can be described as an esoteric dynamic process with transients treatment and spectral shaping.

Saturate

Analogue-like transformer/tube blended emulation of saturation gives the punch a completely different feel. Use it gently to make your track blend in easily or dial the Saturation knob all the way up to get the real street sounds.

Destroy

And you can even punish your drum loops with the Destroy button. Hitting that triples the values you dial with the saturation knob. That results in a heavier form of distortion.

Experiment

Although the primary UrbanPuncher intention is for drum loops it is not where you should stop. The plugin can give extra punch to other instruments such as acoustic guitar or piano. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

The photorealistic graphic user interface of the plugin gives you the feeling you are touching the real hardware. But it easily adapts to your needs. You can always drag the arrow in the bottom right corner to change its size – make it smaller to save valuable screen space, or enlarge it to make it easier to use.

Transient Fertilizer – Bring life to your drums and percussion

No drum deserves to be dull or lame. Fosfat will add bite and oomph to your drums or percussion (or any percussive sounds). It follows the dynamics of the incoming sound and adds tonal and noise textures to it. Klevgrand thinks of it almost like an EQ, in the way it shapes the sound, but it adds instead of cutting or boosting. It’s perfect for when you have a nutrient-deficient recording (lacking bass or attack in a kick drum for example), or if you just want to add some extra sub or pleasant stereo fizz to any percussive sound.

In addition to the obvious option of using multiple instances of Fosfat across your drum tracks, the possibility to precisely dial in its trigger lets you pinpoint any frequency area or transient of your choice in recordings of whole drum kits or any drum loop sample. Easy Controls

With just a couple of simple controls, Punchy Worm keeps you concentrated on the most important thing about your music… the sound. Simply drag the dials to operate and double click to reset them to default. Trust your ears to tell you what sounds good and let the dancing worm take the strain.

Punch & Saturation

Depending on if you set the main dial to the left or right of centre, you’ll hear punch or saturation, combined with smooth and responsive upward and downward compression. With more subtle settings you’ll hear more presence and power. Pushed harder will result in more brutal transient shaping and saturated harmonics. 

In / Out / Bypass

Use the Input control to drive more signal into that rosy red apple, increasing the amount of the effect and resulting in more aggressive processing (and a more frantic freakout from the bewigged worm). The Output dial can be used to volume match the original signal so you can hear exactly what effect the plugin is having on the audio, without artificially increasing the loudness. Click the “Punchy Worm” logo to bypass the plugin for easy A/B comparison.

Oversampling

The leaf at the top of the interface acts as a toggle, which can be set to x1, x2 or x4 interval oversampling. Careful use of this control will reduce unwanted noise from digital aliasing.

Combined dynamics and saturation

There is often some overlap in usage cases between saturation and dynamics. Both can be used to control peaks. Some transients prefer saturation, others prefer dynamics.

Couture comes with both Transient and Saturation sections to make related decisions at the same time. For example for a drum track you can increase dynamics and smash it later with distortion.

Full volume-independence

Transient Shaping is traditionally volume-independent. We extended the Saturation stage to be volume-independent, too

When using Couture you keep the freedom to change input gain afterwards. This avoids some gain-staging dependencies in your signal chain, that may backfire later in the mixing stage.

Compression versus Transient Shaping?

Our vision is that transient control could perhaps be something satisfying.;

In general terms, a compressor is somewhat longer to tune and its parameters change volume: attack, release, ratio, threshold… they change output gain while you tune them.

Essentially, the Transient section of Couture has only 3 parameters and they have semantic meaning:

• Sharpen: add or remove dynamics in one click, how “sharp” the signal is
• Speed: time scale of captured transients
• Front vs Back of the captured note.

When turned to Front, the Sharpen knob acts like the Attack knob on a regular Transient Shaper. When turned to Front, the Sharpen knob acts more like the Sustain knob on a regular Transient Shaper.

To improve predictability, we made Couture’s behavior 100% program-dependent. Couture catches transients very accurately by design.

Punch mode enhances the transients of your audio to help them bite through the mix. Whether you want to subtly accentuate the high-frequency transients in the mid-channel of your master or bring out serious smack on an individual channel, Punch can handle the task.
