1. Pan Knob

by Boz Digital Labs

Pan Knob

Why do I need a plugin for a tool that every daw has?

Yes, this plugin is a pan knob in plugin format. But the truth is, the way traditional pan knobs work kind of sucks for headphone listeners, and according to polls, about 87% of people listen to their music on headphones. Have you ever listened to a mix that had one instrument panned hard to one side? It sounds ok on monitors, but sounds awful on headphones. That’s because traditional panning don’t take headphone listeners into consideration.

Have you ever heard a mix where you have two distinct guitar tones panned to opposite sides, but one dominates the low end and makes the entire mix feel lopsided? That’s because traditional panning treats all frequencies equally, even though our ears don’t.

Pan Knob overcomes this by having a smarter panning algorithm. One that keeps your low frequencies unpanned so that it sounds natural in headphones. It doesn’t do any room simulation, so it isn’t going to mess up your mono mixdown.

Convenient options

Aside from just sounding better, it has a few options to make it more convenient to use. It has a quick “Pan Swap” that will give you the opposite panning position with the click of a button. It has quick one button settings for the most used pan positions. You can choose which pan law is used, and choose between Balance and Pan for your stereo tracks.

Beyond 100%

Sometimes you need to pan a little wider than 100% to either side. Pan Knob lets you go to 120%, to give extra width when you need it.

More Panning Opportunities

When panning with Pan Knob, a whole new world of panning is opened up to you as a mixer. Because it sounds natural wherever you pan your tracks, you aren’t limited by the traditional panning rules that have become standard. You can pan any tracks wherever you want while keeping it sounding good and natural.

Features

  • Better Panning algorithm for all listening formats
  • Choose pan law
  • Switch between Balance/Pan
  • Pan anywhere in your signal chain

MixChecker Versions

Double Check Your Mix

Simulate the devices and environment of your audience to make your mix exceptional for everyone!

Everyone who mixes content for the audience has to make sure that the mixes sound great on every consumer device. It can be done quickly and easily with MixChecker or MixChecker Pro. With tons of new features, the two let you simulate the exact surroundings and devices of your listeners. Because

Features

  • Simulations of many additional consumer devices
  • Simulation of device distortion
  • Background noise
  • Auto-advance function
  • Remote control from iOS, Android and browsers
  • Simple user interface

What’s New In MixChecker Pro?

Everything! Even though the interface has the same elegance and ease of use as the original MixChecker.

  • New simulations. All characteristics are newly measured, the processing engine is completely different with lower latency and phase linearity. No simple impulse responses inside.
  • Create sets of simulations. Drag the selected simulations in any order to the MixChecker button. Save your selection to several button sets together with stereo base width and volume level for each button.
  • Custom settings and labels for buttons. The MixChecker buttons have several adjustable parameters. You may even assign the same simulated device to several buttons, each with unique settings. To distinguish between them, there could be a custom label placed on each button.
  • Distortion. We are experts in exact modelling of distortions and saturations, either of speakers or of amps, preamps and other circuits. We used this experience and we added modelling of these distortions to MixChecker Pro.
  • Background noise. MixChecker adds a possibility to add some audio background with adjustable volume. The combination with simulated devices is quite sophisticated: When you select simulation of phones, the path of the noise through the headphones and ears is simulated, so you hear the realistic combination of the mix playing from headphones and of the nose, coming through headphones from outside.
  • Auto Advance. You don’t need to browse through simulations manually. The adjustable auto advance function does it for you.
  • Advanced stereo modes. Except for simple Mono mode, MixChecker offers channel swap, listening to each channel separately in both monitors. Furthermore, each simulation has adjustable width of the stereo base.
  • Web browser, iOS and Android remote control. MixChecker Pro comes accompanied by a web browser, mobile phone or tablet control. You may walk around your studio when checking the final mix, save the valuable screen size.
  • And more improvements, like interface zoom, calibration, …

The Science Powering the Simulations

The original MixChecker contains only the simulation of the linear behaviour of the devices. We not only added the modelling of non-linear behaviour, but we have also completely rewritten the original processing to achieve phase linearity, lower latency and better resolution in all parts of the frequency spectrum.

Your Studio

Have you ever wondered why your music, your videos, showreels, and movies do not sound well when you move out of your studio? That is because you do not use the same equipment the real people use. And you don’t listen in the same environment and conditions as your audience.

Your Audience

MixChecker Pro turns your studio monitors into consumer devices. It adds some background noise and it simulates the distortion and narrow stereo base of the real listening conditions.

New Button Settings

The magic of MixChecker Pro is that it has so many new features while it´s still as easy to use as the original MixChecker. Why? Because it offers the new Edit mode. In Edit mode, you can assign any simulated device to any device button, set the distortion amount for that exact device, adjust the stereo base width as well as the volume of the device. The simulated devices are organized in categories, so the searching is super-fast and intuitive. Once you have your button set saved, MixChecker Pro exits the Edit mode and you work just as with the original MixChecker.

New Pro Functions

The default view of the new MixChecker Pro has a small adjustments panel at the bottom of the plugin GUI. Here you can adjust some handful settings for the background noise, setup the mono button and if you are not sure if you have reached the distortion threshold or if you are afraid of any hard-clipping during the work, there are 2 LED indicators to show you.

We have simulated a lot of devices! Look at this, it´s just beautiful!

7. Mongoose

by Boz Digital Labs

Mongoose

Mongoose lets you solidify your low end by collapsing your bass frequencies to mono. Out of the box, you will get a tighter, more focused low end. The clear, simple layout makes it so it couldn’t be easier to dial in the exact sound you need.

Here’s the deal: Having a nice wide stereo spread is great. It helps your mix sound more spacious and less cluttered. Instruments seem to fight less and everything just sounds more clear. But our brain reacts differently to a wide stereo spread in high frequencies than it does in low frequencies. Large stereo spread in high frequencies = good. Large stereo spread in low frequencies = not so good.

The problem exists because of the way our ears and brains are used to hearing sounds naturally. With low frequencies, we can’t really detect where a sound is coming from. It’s the high frequencies that lets us know where a sound is coming from.

This can lead to some major issues when mixing on monitors. You might have some low frequencies that are coming out of only one speaker, and you won’t be able to tell. Put on headphones, and it becomes immediately obvious that there is a problem. You can feel your head instinctively turn as your brain tries to figure out why the low end sounds so unnatural.

This is where Mongoose comes in. It takes all those wide low frequencies and puts them right in the middle where they belong. The result is a low end that translates better to headphones and 2.1 systems, and just provides a tighter, more natural sound overall.

This plugin really couldn’t be any easier to use than it is. Just set your crossover frequency, and everything below that is summed to mono. You can also fine tune how wide the stereo image is by adjusting the width knobs. This is the kind of plugin that should automatically be on every master bus.

System Requirements

Available Formats

  • Win (32 and 64 bit): VST, VST3, RTAS, AAX Native
  • Mac (32 and 64 bit): VST, VST3, RTAS, AU, AAX Native

8. SigMod

by NUGEN Audio

SigMod

Now with VST3 Hosting

Twelve single-process modules

Instantly enhance the functionality of your plug-ins and DAW with twelve different signal modification units. Explore new creative possibilities and quickly add missing features. Each module can easily be inserted, swapped and moved around making new options to correct, convert or tweak your audio.

Expand your system

SigMod contains many useful, creative functions which are otherwise difficult to engage. Combine these single-process modules in any order to design the precise routing you require. Auto-resizing keeps the signal flow and functionality clear at all times.

  • Master & channel strip features
  • Signal monitoring & routing options
  • Mid/side conversion
  • Output level protection
  • Frequency banded splits
  • 1000’s of possibilities…

Use stereo plug-ins in mid/side mode

Add mid/side functionality to classic stereo compressor and EQ emulations, or get creative with mid/side delays, distortion and many other effects by inserting the mid/side encoder/decoder either side of any left/right plug-in instance.

Protect speakers, ears & sanity

Insert the Protect unit across your output bus and this safety module will automatically cut in to prevent bursts of noise or feedback howls due to system errors, saving both your nerves and your speakers. Manual or auto reset options give you the level of protection you need – a real gift when working with headphones!

Tap and crossover

Want to try some parallel processing? Drop in the Tap module and you are good to go. Use the Crossover module to split the highs from the lows to apply different effects to different frequency ranges – great for avoiding muddying up the low frequencies or getting creative with automation and sweep effects.

Host any VST3 plug-in anywhere within your signal chain

Enhance the functionality of your plug-ins and enable multiple new applications. A dual mono option allows for independent processing of two parallel channels, turbo-charging your existing plug-in collection with new creative possibility.

For your DAW

Several of SigMod’s modules offer easy access to functionality which is either missing from certain DAWs, or at least complicated to access natively. Solo/mute or trim the left and right sides of a stereo signal independently, or easily flip the stereo image in one click. Quickly detect and correct DC offset to retain valuable headroom.

How does your mix sound in mono? Think about how many listeners will be using a phone or a DAB radio with one speaker – the Mono module switches your signal from stereo to mono in one click. You can also check the phase relationship between your left and right channels with the Phase module.

Your imagination is the limit

With SigMod’s creative signal routing – particularly the Mid/side, Tap and Crossover modules – the possibilities are virtually endless, not to mention easy and tweakable.

Ever wondered how your go-to tape emulator would sound in mid/side mode?

Splitting your vocals into 6 different frequency bands and sending each of them to a different compressor?

How about 600 to 800Hz through your favourite guitar amp sim, and the side channels above 13kHz sent to a giant hall reverb? Unusual, but very easy.

9. MCompare

by MeldaProduction

MCompare

MCompare is the ultimate reference tool for mixing and mastering allowing you to quickly compare your audio to any audio file and stages of your processing chain, and saves you from loudness deception.

Astonishing Workflow for the Essential Task

Comparing your audio to a reference commercial track is essential for every mixing and mastering engineer. Of course you can do that in your host, but the workflow is what matters here. And it cannot be any easier. Press one button and the plugin quickly crossfades between your track and whatever track you choose. Press another one to choose a different track. Or a different stage of your mastering chain for example…

Better or Just Louder?

Your ears can fool you whether you like it or not. Louder music makes you think it sounds better. It lets you feel spectral and spatial balance incorrectly. It lets you ignore acoustic errors hidden under the loud wall of sound, but this plugin can help you avoid that! It can automatically make the reference tracks match the loudness of your own track. With MCompare you don’t need to doubt your senses anymore. If your audio will sound better, it really will be better, not just louder.

Does Your Master Actually Sound Better?

How many times did you spend hours working on your project and just when you felt it’s perfect, you took a break and when you listened to it afterwards you were horrified? That’s because your ears fooled you somewhere on the road.

MCompare lets you compare your master to multiple stages in your chain, the dry mix for starters. It will compensate for any latency and match the loudness, so you will really be comparing the sonic qualities of your master and don’t let your ears deceive you! So when you start doing something wrong, you will know quickly enough, in one click to be precise.

The Ultimate Mastering Chain with Referencing

MCompare is the only plugin that lets you compare your master to the chosen reference tracks, dry mix, different stages of your mastering chaing and even different versions of your mastering chain. All in a single instance, where everything is one click away. It just cannot be any easier.

  • Modern user interfaces must not only be easy and quick to use, but also versatile and the whole visual appearance should inspire you. MCompare features the most advanced GUI engine on the market. It is still the first and only GUI engine, which is freely resizable and stylable. It also lets you choose between knobs, sliders or buttons, whichever you like the most.
  • The plugin can look as an ancient vintage gear, if you are working on old-school rock music. Or as super-modern futuristic device if you are working on modern electronic music.
  • If your display doesn’t have a high resolution, you can make the plugin smaller. If the fonts are too small, you can make the plugin bigger and save your eyes.
  • All the graphics is accelerated using your GPU, graphical interface, providing ultimately quick response and keep your CPU focused on the audio.

Unique Visualisation Engine with Classic Meters and Time Graphs

  • Your ears should always be the main judge, but a smart metering system can often be a huge help. MCompare provides the most advanced metering system out there. The plugin can display the measurements of all relevant values using classic meters, or it can even show them in time using the time graphs. Everything is customisable as usual.

M/S, Single Channel, Up to 8 Channels Surround Processing…

  • MCompare can handle not only mono and stereo signals, but also mid/side encoding for stereo field processing, separate left & right channels, separate mid or side signal and up to 8 channels of surround audio. It is perfect for audio production for music, movies, games…

MIDI Controllers with MIDI Learn

  • MCompare contains a powerful MIDI processor, which listen to MIDI controllers and MIDI keyboard and control any parameters realtime.

Very Fast, Optimized for SSE/SSE2/SSE3 Processors

  • Computers are now extremely fast, but the algorithms are more complex and projects bigger, so we still need to use the processing power with care. MCompare uses the fastest algorithms, takes advantage of the newest processor capabilities and lets your GPU hangle the graphics. The plugin is among the fastest on the market, yet it provides the best possible audio quality.

Global Preset Management and Online Preset Exchange

  • MCompare presets are carefully stored in a system database and you can quickly access then from any project in any host. The plugin can automatically share your presets and download presets of other users from our servers. We are building a community and you can be a part of it!

Supports VST, VST3, AU and AAX Interfaces on Windows & Mac, both 32-bit and 64-bit

  • MCompare supports all major hosts on both platforms. Check system requirements for information about compatibility and installation.

No Dongle nor Internet Access is Required for Activation

  • How many times did you forget your USB dongle? We are an honest company and expect the same from our customers. Our software uses licence files to activate your software. And the licences are to-person, so you can use it on all your computers as long as you are the user.

Free-for-Life Updates

  • When you buy the software you are entitled to free updates, forever. No more money wasted on major upgrades like it is with other companies. And we upgrade our software a lot!

System Requirements

Windows

  • Windows Vista / 7 / 8 / 10 (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • VST / VST3 / AAX compatible host (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • Intel/AMD processor with SSE2 support

Always use 32-bit plugins in 32-bit hosts, or 64-bit plugins in 64-bit hosts!

64-bit plugins can’t work in 32-bit hosts even if the operating system is 64-bit. Do NOT use 32-bit plugins in 64-bit hosts. They would have to be bridged and can become slow and unstable.

Mac OS X

  • Mac OS X (10.7 and newer, 32-bit or 64-bit)
  • VST / VST3 / AU / AAX compatible host (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • Intel/AMD processor with SSE2 support

13. Blue Cat’s Hot Tuna

by Blue Cat Audio

Blue Cat's Hot Tuna

Tuning with Cat-Ears

Blue Cat’s Hot Tuna is a high precision chromatic tuner plug-in that can dim or mute the signal when active. The reference frequency can be adjusted to support any type of tuning. Hot Tuna is a very simple yet powerful plug-in: you can freely adjust the amount of dimming, an indispensable feature for live gigs!

The reference frequency can be changed (from 430 to 450 Hz), when non-standard tuning is required. Most of the processing is performed in the background so that the tuner does not impact the performance of the real-time audio engine of the host.

14. RP-Reverse

by Rob Papen

RP-Reverse

Thinking out of the box is part of what the Rob Papen brand ethos is, however, we do not want to lose the fact that plugins should be there for creating music. Well, here we present RP-Reverse which is an FX plugin for the creative minded artist that loves to add different sonic ingredients into their tracks!

RP-Reverse reverses the incoming audio in a creative way, the resulting audio can be tempo-synced to make it easily fit the reversed sound right into your track. With RP-Reverse it is also possible to trigger the recording of the audio (which is reversed) in various ways.

In true Rob Papen style, it’s not just about the main feature! On the reversed signal you can also add distortion, two analog modelled Filters or a Comb Filter.
On top of this, you will also find a handy LFO to modulate the reversed audio and the Filters.

Whilst using RP-Reverse in the creative process we kept in mind that you might like to fade in/out the reversed sound or use a mute button. The top section, therefore, has a separate volume dial for the reversed audio and a separate mute button to make it easy to automate these functions in your music host program.

RP-Reverse is a cool plugin to be used on your drum-loops, vocals or instruments, and for adding ‘thinking out of the box’ type FX to your tracks!

15. MDoubleTracker

by MeldaProduction

MDoubleTracker

MDoubleTracker is a marvellous natural sounding artificial stereo expander. Need some wide vocals? Or some huge guitars? MDoubleTracker has been designed for just that!

Natural Big Sound, like the Real Thing

Double tracking is a simple old technique, but it’s also hard to get it right and takes a very long time, after all, you need to record things multiple times, then you have the timing problems and so on. With MDoubleTracker it is as simple as inserting the effect into your DAW. It will do some magic by varying pitch and delays in both left and right channels to get you that big wide sound, with ease and perfect timing. It can be even used in surround environment.

Good Old Algorithms

MDoubleTracker is based on some pretty old techniques used for decades on some hardware modules such as Eventide H3000. These have been used by high end producers for decades. We just improved them a bit and got you some additional features, just in case you feel creative.

by Blue Cat Audio

Blue Cat's Re-Head

Mixing Room Experience with the Convenience of Headphones

For many audio professionals, listening on headphones is a necessary evil. Perhaps you need headphones when tracking? Perhaps you need to work away from your studio? Or perhaps your studio has that one neighbour that simply can’t enjoy your creative output at 3 AM in the morning? Listening through headphones creates an unnatural sound that’s quite different from how we hear music from speakers.

Re-Head will create a mixing room experience when using headphones, even when recording distorted guitars and other instruments that tend to sound unnaturally in-your-face in a headphone mix.

At the centre is a head response model that mimics the effect of your own skull on your hearing when listening through loudspeakers. Add to that stereo processing to avoid the hard-panned sound so common in headphones, a spectrum analyzer and EQ. There is even an impulse response representation of your favoured mixing room to let you feel right at home, even when you’re not.

Re-Head won’t replace your favourite studio monitors, for sure. But it will make the transition from speakers to headphones less dramatic.

Features

  • “Head response” model: get a more natural tone when working with headphones.
  • Adjust the position and the angle between the virtual speakers.
  • Adjust the brightness.
  • Built-in EQ and spectrum analyzer.
  • Impulse response (IR) loader to mimic your listening room, and compensate actual headphones.
  • Flip left and right channels.
  • No latency.

18. Blue Cat’s Plug’n Script 3.0

by Blue Cat Audio

Blue Cat's Plug'n Script 3.0

Blue Cat’s Plug’n Script is an audio and MIDI scripting plug-in that can be programmed to build custom effects or virtual instruments, without quitting your favorite DAW software.

With this plug-in, you can write your own plug-in with very little knowledge about programming. If you do not care about programming, Blue Cat’s Plug’n Script can also be used as a regular multi effects processor with existing scripts or to get someone else write this very particular utility you have been searching for years and cannot find anywhere.

If you are an experienced programmer, you will find in Plug’n Script a powerful development environment for audio plug-ins: prototype algorithms quickly, generate a state of the art graphical user interface (GUI) without a single line of code, and export a VST plug-in, right from within your favorite DAW! Creating a plug-in has never been so fast!

This plug-in has been in our lab for several years and has been used to prototype lots of our existing plug-ins. It supports both scripts distributed as source code and pre-compiled binary scripts.

For source scripts, it uses the high performance AngelScript scripting engine, originally developed for video games, with a JIT compiler that helps compiling scripts into machine code for optimal performance. Starting with version 2, the plug-in also supports native (compiled) code and can load binary scripts built from C or C++ (or any language that can export C functions, such as Delphi, Fortran, .Net…), using the same interface as the angelscript version.

The syntax of the AngelScript language is close to Java, C#, C++ or JavaScript, making it very easy to learn. It is also convenient to reuse your scripts into native code, or integrate code snippets found on the web into your script. Also, switching between angelscript and binary versions of the same script is very easy, requiring very few changes.

The plug-in includes dozens of audio and MIDI processing scripts as well as several virtual instruments and utilities to enhance your workflow. They can be used as is, or as examples to get started to write your own scripts. User scripts can be shared in the scripts repository, which also includes the factory scripts and native projects for reference.

Main Features

  • Audio and MIDI scripting plug-in.
  • Build your own Audio and MIDI effects or virtual instruments.
  • Export your effect or instrument as an independent VST plug-in.
  • Simple scripting syntax, using either the AngelScript language (similar to C++, Java or javascript) or C/C++ for native code.
  • Native binary scripts support (compiled C, C++ or Delphi, Fortran…).
  • Fully customizable user interface that adapts to scripts automatically. Build your own using Blue Cat’s KUIML language.
  • Up to 48 input parameters and 32 outputs, with full MIDI and automation control.
  • Use your favorite Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for editing.
  • Integrated JIT (Just In Time) compiler for optimal performance (scripts are not interpreted but compiled).
  • Includes 56 scripts with source code and 136 presets for sound synthesis, MIDI FX, audio FX (comp, gate, tremolo echo, filters, looper…), waveform generation, file playback/recording and more.
  • Side chain input and auxiliary outputs support.
  • Surround support (up to 8 audio channels).

Blue Cat Audio Standards:

  • Available as: Mac-AAX, Mac-AU, Mac-RTAS, Mac-VST, Mac-VST3, Win-AAX, Win-DX, Win-RTAS, Win-VST, Win-VST3, Win x64-AAX, Win x64-DX, Win x64-VST, Win x64-VST3.
  • Native DSP code for optimal performance.
  • Full MIDI control and automation support with silent, zipper-free parameters update, advanced response control and MIDI Learn.
  • No CPU load on idle: when the plug-in is fed with silence, the processing smoothly shuts down, to optimize the CPU usage of your Digital Audio Workstation.
  • Customizable user interface with transparency management and zoom.
  • Automation and MIDI output: record output parameters as automation curves or send MIDI CC messages to other plug-ins for powerful side chain effects.
  • Smooth Bypass: activate/deactivate the plug-in with absolutely no noise.
  • Undo/Redo.
  • Full featured integrated presets manager.
  • Copy/paste the state of the plug-in between instances using the system clipboard.
  • Any sample rate supported.

System Requirements

26. MixChecker

by Audified

MixChecker

You Mix For The People

Turn your studio monitors into classic reference monitors or several consumer devices to hear, what your audience will hear.

All Available MixChecker Versions:

Everyone who mixes content for the audience has to make sure, that their mixes sound great in every environment. That must be done quickly and easily.

This ultimate mixing assistant will help you to get better mixes instantly. MixChecker saves your precious time. Plug it in the master track of your project as the last segment of your listening chain and quickly turn your studio monitors into classic reference monitors or several consumer devices.

Have you ever wondered why your music, your videos, showreels and movies do not sound well when you move out of your studio? Why do they lose punch and clarity that your awesome studio monitors deliver? That is because you do not use the same equipment the real people use. To bring the best quality to your audience, you need to check your mixes as often as possible. That is why we made MixChecker. Because we know You mix for the People.

Key Features

  • Simulations of average/standard consumer commercial devices
  • Compensation for smaller monitors
  • Hear what your audience will hear
  • Instant check – instant corrections
  • No more extra exports
  • An enormous amount of time saved

Do You Hear What They Hear?

The consumers, the people you are mixing your content for, do not use hi-end studio monitors. They watch TV, listen to music in their cars. They even use their desktop speakers, tablets and smartphones or their earphones. You need your mix to sound great despite what lousy conditions your audience uses.

Your Studio

Have you ever wondered why your music, your videos, showreels, and movies do not sound well when you move out of your studio? Why do they lose punch and clarity that your awesome studio monitors deliver? That is because you do not use the same equipment the real people use.

Your Audience

To bring the best quality to your audience, you need to check your mixes as often as possible. That is why we made MixChecker. Because we know You mix for the People. Plug it in the master track of your project as the last segment of your listening chain and quickly turn your studio monitors into classic reference monitors or several consumer devices.

No More Extra Exports

In past, to ensure your mix sounds right on any device, you had to export your sound and listen in different conditions. Import your mix to your smartphone, burn on CD and listen in your car, get back to your studio, do little tweaks and export again…

Now you can use the MixChecker to perform a quick round test that will only take a few seconds. And get back to mixing and corrections while you still know what the problem in your mix was.

What It Does

MixChecker functions are divided into two sections. The Simulation offers acoustic models of several consumer devices and classic reference monitors. Pressing a single button will turn your monitors into the selected device. Not all studio monitors deliver a flat frequency response. Therefore we also added the Compensation section. It will allow you to tell MixChecker, you are using an average of 5″ or 8″ speakers or headphones. That will change the resulting sound accordingly. The Bypass button turns all processing off. When illuminated, only the clean signal comes through MixChecker.

The Bypass button turns all processing off. When illuminated, only the clean signal comes through MixChecker.

How We Made It

We measured the frequency responses and behaviour of all the devices listed in MixChecker in laboratory conditions to create their true and faithful models that you can rely on.

30. Blue Cat’s Remote Control

by Blue Cat Audio

Blue Cat's Remote Control

Blue Cat’s Remote Control is a set of plug-ins which let you control and monitor in real time several MIDI controllable plug-ins or devices from a single customizable user interface: the user interface of your favorite DirectX or VST plugin does not satisfy you? Your favorite hardware device is too complicated to control? Your project contains hundreds of plug-ins and you would like to control them all from a single user interface? You want undo/redo for all your modifications? This product was designed for you. The package includes 3 plug-ins: Remote Control 16, 32 and 64, which have the ability to manage up to 16, 32 or 64 parameters. You can assign a MIDI channel and CC number to each controller, customize its response curve.

You can as well choose a skin that suits your needs for every instance of the remote control (several skins are included in the package, see the screenshots), or create your own (see the Skins section): this is the best way to create your own user interface to control your entire Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) the way you have chosen. If you have a very specific project and you do not have time to spend on our Skinning Language, Blue Cat Audio can also create custom skins for you: see our Services page for more information. Another way to use the product is for MIDI control remapping and transform: assign an input parameter a given MIDI CC, and assign the associated output parameter to another MIDI CC with different response curve parameters: the plug-in will remap the controller to the new CC and channel with a new response curve.

35. BloXpander

by eaReckon

BloXpander

This VST host has been designed to meet the requirements of musicians and sound engineers in live situations. As a serious musician, you surely need a complete DAW to record your music, but when you are in front of your audience, it may be easier to use something dedicated to live situations. And during live situations, the access to your instruments and effects must be fast and intuitive. The adjustment of these must be done efficiently, and the necessary software sub layers running on your computer should not be your concern when it comes to play or produce music.

BloXpander has been designed with in mind, the obsession to provide an easy to use “machine” powered by advanced features. It was important that both the beginner and the professional easily find the features they need, without being visually swamped with what is unnecessary during a session.

Nowadays, the musical possibilities offered by our computers are far more than what I could have expected 15 years ago. However, some of us do not have the desire to disperse their time in a lot of “computer geeks” activities, because they are just passionate about music.

In the past, the access to audio hardware wasn’t that easy because of its price. Today, we have an easier access to an arsenal of powerful tools but we usually don’t use every available thing on a daily basis.

I consider a piece of software in the same manner as a hardware device. I wouldn’t bring 4 full racks of hardware to a small show but even in such a situation, I would like to play my music in a version that is not too “cheap” compared to the original version.

Similarly, a sound engineer doesn’t always have the opportunity to hire the device he needs to facilitate his on-site tasks, when the wanted thing remains in the studio.
This is why I always have my laptop with me and I regard this machine as a fully-fledged musical instrument. Still I wanted a piece of software that combines the power of a computer and the efficiency of a dedicated device. The interface of BloXpander has been designed to match this basis specification. It is visually attractive and clear, the construction of projects and the access to prepared instruments and effects is very fast. The plugins manipulation is direct (especially when BloXpander is coupled to an external MIDI controller).

In a live situation, switching from a complete “scene” to another is done with a double-click.

Even if BloXpander has been especially thought for live situations, it can also find its place within the studio. There it can be used as an expander or a top notch multi-FX unit.
Whatever your current workstation is, it may be interesting to take advantage of the plethora of available plugins working under Windows ™, installed on a PC dedicated to BloXpander.

BloXpander also has the potential to facilitate the work of music teachers or theatre technicians, providing an immediate and easily transportable access to a remarkable amount of instruments and effects. The versatility of audio tools is not so critical when we can take a full load of them in just a bag.

However, don’t take me wrong. I don’t try to advocate the supremacy of software across hardware, but more humbly propose a supplementary tool that can certainly find a place aside your current setup. And since computers are a tool that musicians can no longer ignore, I am pleased to share this software solution that is just an attempt to give some credibility to those who claim “a computer can be nothing else than a genuine musical instrument”.

You Are…

You are a keyboard player…

You probably use virtual instruments coupled to effects, all loaded into your favorite DAW. BloXpander is not intended to replace your favorite sequencer, but to facilitate the handling of your plugins when speed and control are critical factors. This is the case during rehearsals and live performances, or when you want to play your instrument when inspiration is in the air or just for pleasure… If your master keyboard has additional controllers (potentiometers, for example) you will fully enjoy BloXpander optimized MIDI control.

You are a vocalist…

No need of a great speech on the need to apply some effects on your voice so it “sits into the mix”. If you have experienced a studio quality recording, you are already aware… During rehearsals and public performances, BloXpander provides a way to benefit from your virtual instruments and effects without the need to make you look as a secretary in front of a computer between two songs.

You are a guitar or a bass player…

Enjoy an arsenal of effects in the space of a laptop. Serenely prepare your virtual rig during rehearsals (or at home) for each tune of each of your sets. Only one action is needed to change your complete rig between two songs. Control all your effects from a MIDI pedal board and maximize the actions your foot will have to accomplish. You can connect the audio outputs of your computer directly to the hardware mixer or if you don’t want to quit good habits, connect them to a preamp or a guitar/bass amplifier (equipped with line inputs).

You are a drummer…

By using electronic drums, you have the opportunity to play a hyper realistic software drums sampler and switch from a jazz set to a metal set in no time. You can then assign effects such as compression, gate, EQ, etc. to the various elements of your virtual set (especially if you use a plugin with multiple outputs). Only one action is needed to change the set and retrieve your presets. If you have an external MIDI controller, you can pre-mix your drums or apply a temporary creative effect from your throne. If you play acoustic drums and don’t have a sound engineer at your disposal during live performances, an audio interface with multiple inputs coupled to BloXpander will give you the opportunity to assign all types of effects or simply mix the microphones placed on your drums set. Mostly, BloXpander will preserve all your ready-to-call settings.

You are a band…

If your audio interface and the power of your computer are sufficient, all the musicians of your band can use the same unique computer… Only one of you is then needed to control the sound from a readable interface.

You are a sound engineer…

You are used to make the sound of multiple bands during a same live performance. In this case, some serious efforts are needed to organize and remember the nice amount of the settings you defined during a long sound check, aren’t they? You probably already know… switching from one band to another and recalling much of these settings from a double click or even refining these settings during the show from a motorized MIDI controller can seriously make your life easier. You are surely familiar with your VST effects and maybe you would like to use them outside the studio. nBloXPander has been thought for you by providing an optimized control and a lightning fast access to all your VST effects and instruments, without the need to be visually invaded by features you don’t need during live situations.

You don’t use Windows™…

Your main computer is equipped with OSX or Linux and BloXpander cannot be installed on it. We do not plan to release non-Windows™ versions of BloXpander soon. In the future, if something brings the opportunity to adapt BloXpander to another OS, we will think about it. However, BloXpander has initially been thought to be installed on a PC dedicated to it, in order to make a musical instrument from a laptop. If you already have a good laptop equipped with Windows™, additionally to your main computer, it’s possible to link the two computers during studio sessions, and take a part of your studio when going outside. Finally, a laptop is not larger than a stack of dedicated machines! To link a computer with OSX (or Windows™) to another computer equipped with Windows ™, several solutions are available to you, such as MIDI linking and/or the excellent free Plasq Wormhole 2 plugin.

In General…

A good laptop dedicated to BloXpander, with a full-load of VST effects and instruments, can be a kind of very big expander coupled to a massive multi-effects, both integrated in an intuitive mixer that provides routing possibilities which should satisfy the most “twisted” of you!
