Sore is a state-of-the-art cinematic loop module for Kontakt containing 350 different kits that can be played in tandem across four categories (Bass, Melody, Ambience and Groove).

These kits are built using the included 1,300 (unencrypted) 24-bit WAV files. All loops can be played polyphonically, time-stretched within a range of two octaves (24 semitones).

Each part has its own colour-coded range on the keyboard. You can alternatively play the loops sliced using the “Slice” button in the sequencer pages.

There are special MIDI trigger keys/notes that enable you to retrigger a currently playing slice (when a sequencer is turned on) or to trigger a volume “trance gate” per part.

The Mix Page

From here you can mix and match the individual loops (parts) – the top LCD shows the current kit or simply “—USER—” if you’ve modified the kit (loaded a different loop).

You have 4 LC-displays that show the current (loaded) loop. From there you can select different loops or let SORE choose new ones by clicking on the “R” buttons (randomize). When you press Shift and Alt/Option on the first randomize button on the mix page (Bass section), then that will also alter the sequencer state randomly (on or off) and choose a random sequencer preset for all four parts.

The Solo buttons can be used to solo parts. Clicking any Solo button with Control/Command or Shift will deactivate any active solo.

For almost all controls you can press Alt/Option and adjust the value for all parts at once (It´s always stated in Kontakt’s information window). Control/Command will reset values. Shift is for fine-tuning.

The Space knobs set the amount of convolution reverb for the selected part (The “Space” toggle button must be enabled in the FX page).

The FX buttons can be used to enable or disable FX sections for the parts. The SEQ buttons will enable/disable the per-part sequencer.

The Edit Page

The Edit page lets you set up parameters for each of the four parts. Sore features per-part loop speed control (half, normal, double speed and freeze).

You got a filter modifier with cutoff and resonance, amplifier and filter envelope control, modwheel mapping (volume, lowpass or highpass filter cutoff), pitch bend range as well as a solid bus compressor, tape-saturation, a lowcut and a stereo width adjustment.

The FX Page

Sore comes with a comprehensive onboard FX section. Besides the basic bread-and-butter effects like auto-pan, flanger and delay, you also got some more interesting effects:

The Step Filter is a tempo-synced bandpass filter that randomly changes it’s cutoff. The Amount controls the strength of the cutoff sweeps. The Step Gate is a classical volume “trance gate”.  In the middle are on/off toggle buttons for the various effect sections. To the right is a preset menu with 32 presets and a randomize button that chooses one randomly.

The Space Reverb comes with 60 impulse responses that you can choose via the dropdown menu.

The Seq Page

Perhaps the most interesting thing in Sore. Each part has a 2 x 32 step sequencer that lets you not only control the sample offset per part but also the loop offset. So basically it loads 32 loops per part into the RAM and then you can offset which one to play. (Which delivers really interesting results in no time!).

Furthermore, each part has 32 presets (together with the famous “R” button), a rate control (1/2 , 1/4,  1/8 , 1/16), start step and end step offset knobs + a Slice and a Gate button:

• Gate button: If the current step in the first (sample offset) sequencer is 0 it won´t play the loop at this moment. (Required for some presets.)
• Slice button: Let´s you play the first 24 slices on the keyboard of the selected loop chromatically. (“AKAI-Style”).

It will then use the default pitch, that you can still change using the Semi knobs on the mix page.

On top of that, you can even record your own pattern data using the pattern recording buttons for either sample offset (SO) or loop offset (LO).

MAD – RocknFunk is the first full installment of the MAD Drum Kit Series. It features an integrated hi-end environment for producing Uber realistic drum grooves with maximum nuance and impact! The idea behind RocknFunk was to sample several iconic kits in such a way to retain a very focused and direct tonal quality at all dynamic levels. With an extended articulation options, a versatile mixer, dedicated groove engine, and immediate playability, you can quickly program convincing drum beats with lots of musical and sonic detail.

RocknFunk packs a lot under the hood with customized elaborate scripts and features that enhance both realistic playback and ease of use. Some features, such as the extensive microphone bleed and Snare Grace notes Legatos, have never before seen in a drum library!

The Highlights

• Unique Recording Concept – Each kit was captured in a different space using a unique blend of microphones and by recording numerous articulations. We focused on developing unique scripting features to simplify the drum programming process and keep you focused on the creative process.

• Highly Playable – The kits are effortless to play. We’ve implemented extended articulations featuring special playing techniques, Left/Right hand samples, multiple playing zones, and combination strokes. Other playability features include: automatic note overlap prevention, an extensive Hi Hat engine, and a variable velocity setup.

• Flexible Mixing Architecture – Rocknfunk includes an ergonomic mixing environment of up to 14 individual microphone perspectives including EQ, Sends/Returns, and custom bussing.

• Extensive Hi-Hat Engine – The Hi-Hat engine features various articulations and 6 degrees of Close-To-Open modulation. The auto foot pedal and Legato transitions help you to easily switch between playing zones and apply real-time modulation. The variable attack and velocity curves add the final touch for an unsurpassed Hi Hat action.

• Comprehensive Microphone Bleed Control – Each kit sports around 50dB of dynamic range, which offers a great deal of musicality. MAD’s signal flow design gives you full control over audio leakage (microphone bleed) from almost every microphone perspective. This unprecedented control brings a new level of realism and nuance to drums sound.

• Legato Snare Grace Notes, Cymbal Chokes, and Note Overlap Prevention – MAD features an ergonomic key mapping and articulation layout. Snare grace notes are triggered automatically by playing legato eliminating unnecessary bloat to the mapping. Same goes to cymbal chokes where you can choke any individual cymbal from one key. Since we’ve included dedicated Left and Right hand samples, the engine disallows impossible note overlaps keeping your performance clean and real!

• Dedicated Groove Engine – Explore plenty of Rock and Funk beats complete with alternate grooves and fills ranging from subtle to extreme. All grooves are un-quantized and can be dragged to your host as standard MIDI files.

The Instruments

Each of the three included kits is unique and offers a great deal of timbre contrast. We recorded each kit in a different space to further extend versatility of sound. Each recording space has inspired us with different recording techniques, microphone selection, and playing styles.

We then developed custom scripts and a user interface that is deep, yet straightforward and easy to use. The outcome is collection of drum kits that offers a detailed and organic sound that will enhance any music style.

This kit includes smaller than usual Toms and Kick drum giving the kit a very punchy and resonant sound. It works best with Funk and Indie Rock music styles.

Features & tech

FHP sports 50dB of dynamic range and a multitude of standard, and non-standard articulations, which help bring the instruments to life, showing off their true musical potential.

When recording the instruments we modified the studio to be as transparent as possible, enhancing the raw sound of each drum. Each instrument features up to 3 microphone positions, and plenty of velocity layers/round robins, covering a wide collection of articulations and utilizing multiple drum zones and hand strokes..

Extended Articulations – It’s all about nuance

Percussion instruments, and hand Percussion in particular, offer so much more diversity beyond traditional articulations. Especially when expanding them with extended and unique playing methods. In doing so, each instrument becomes a world of sound and detailed nuance, giving you an opportunity for expressive thematic writing.

Legato Drumming ™ – Hyper realistic playback

Legato Drumming is a feature specifically designed for hand drum samples.

It adds a layer of real time gestural sounds, simulating typical vibrations and hand noises that occur when moving between articulations. Appropriate sounds are added during playback and react to speed and dynamics.

Additionally, sustain and resonance is automatically controlled when playing muted articulations or when muting a stroke on the fly.

‘Mirror’ mapping – Create grooves on the fly with ease

Hand drums are usually played using 2 hands. Building realistic grooves relies on this fundamental technique.

In FHP we sampled unique Left and Right hand samples for ALL articulations (!) When designing the MIDI mapping layout, we completed the original 2-hand premise and mapped the Left and Right hand samples symmetrically in a mirror-like fashion.

We also simulated the physical location of articulations as it relates to the mapping layout so triggering sounds from the center of the keyboard, is respective to articulations played on the center of the drum skin.

Bioscape is a 4.5GB Kontakt instrument that is based on field recordings and found sounds to create musical content, this gives you an unpolished, raw and organic dimension to your production. Bioscape is particularly suitable for game and filmscore composers, but works extremely well with ambient music, music concréte, sound healing, music therapy or as a standalone experimental instrument.
