Doepfer A-156
Dual Quantiser
The A-156 Module is a dual control voltage quantiser. A quantiser converts a continuous input control voltage in the range of 0 ... 10V into a stepped output voltage in the same voltage range. The possible steps in the A-156 are not restricted to the usual half-tone grid (ie gradation in 1 / 12V steps) but also allows other scales of the grid such as the major scale, minor scale, major chord , Minor chord, fundamental fifth and the inclusion of sixth or seventh in the chords. The voltage values at the input are only converted into discrete voltages at the output, which meet the selection criterion for the permissible voltage grid (for example a minor seventh chord). The operating mode for Quantiser 1 is set with 3 tilt switches with center position. The Quantiser 2 is fixed to the half-tone grid. For each of the two Quantisers there is a control input (CV In), a control output (CV Out), a trigger input (trig in) and a trigger output (trig. Out). If no signal is present at the trigger input (socket open), the quantisation is carried out continuously. If, however, a square-wave signal is applied there (from an LFO or the MIDI-SYNC interface for example), the quantisation is always performed only at the rising edge of the trigger signal. The quantisation process can thus be synchronised with other processes on demand. At the trigger output, a pulse appears whenever a quantisation (or a step change in the output voltage) occurs. For example, an envelope generator (ADSR) can be started. In addition, the module has a common transpose input, which can be added to both quantisers and is quantised in a halftone grid. A typical application for this is to transpose a quantized sequence (generated by the A-155) with a second control voltage (from the MIDI CV interface for the example).

Doepfer A-137-1 Wave Multiplier I
Wave multiplier
A-137-1 is a voltage controlled waveform multiplier. The basic idea of a wave multiplier is to multiply the waveform of an incoming audio signal (e.g. triangle/sinus/sawtooth of a VCO) within one period. This creates additional harmonics in the audio signal. The period duration and thus also the pitch of the signal remain unchanged - in contrast to frequency multiplication such as with the PLL module A-196. The A-137-1 works as an "inverse low-pass filter", i.e. it adds additional harmonics to a signal poor in overtones, whereas a low-pass filter (e.g. A-120) filters out overtones from a signal rich in overtones. Therefore, the A-137 gives the best results in combination with comparatively low harmonic waveforms (e.g. triangle, sine) as input signal. For overtone-rich input signals (e.g. sawtooth) the A-137 can also be used, but the effect is not as spectacular as with a triangle signal. With square-wave signals, the effect of the A-137 is hardly noticeable. The Multiples parameter (adjustable manually and by control voltage) defines the number of waveform multiplications within a period. The two parameters Folding Level and Symmetry (both adjustable manually and by control voltage) set the upper and lower level at which the convolution of the signal takes place. The function of these two parameters is shown graphically in the diagram below. The Harmonics parameter (adjustable manually and by control voltage) adds further harmonics (i.e. in addition to the harmonics created by waveform multiplication) by sharpening the waveform edges (amplification and limiting) and adding overshoot peaks (attenuated waves at the edges).

Doepfer A-120 Vintage Edition
24 dB Low Pass 1 (VCF1)
Module A-120 is a voltage-controlled 24 dB low-pass filter, which filters out the high frequency components from a sound spectrum while allowing the low frequencies to pass unhindered. The cut-off frequency (corner frequency) determines the point at which this effect occurs. They can be set or modulated both manually and via control voltages (filter modulation, with an LFO for example). The VCF1 is configured as a "transistor cascade" with an edge slope of -24 dB / octave, which is also used in various Moog synthesisers, This results in the typical, "legendary" Moog sound. The resonance (emphasis) can be adjusted at the VCF 1 up to self-oscillation. In this case, the filter operates as a sinusoidal oscillator.
