The Hotteterre tenor has a uniform strong and warm sound across all registers. It is particularly suited to solo playing, especially since its range of 2 1/2 octaves makes transverse flute pieces available to it. Because of their long scale, these tenors can not be played without a key.

Ehlert recorders have a range of 2 1/2 octaves. The c#4 (S), f#3 (A) and c#3 (T) can be played without the annoying covering of the sound hole.
