About Modern Upright

The Modern Upright is based on a Yamaha U3 upright piano – regarded by many pianists as a modern classic. It has a tight and defined tone with an airy ambience that makes it fit nicely into almost any production. Included presets cover everything ranging from smooth jazz with a mellow, warm tone to bright pop with an upfront sound.

Our Modern Upright is based on a Yamaha U3 piano in excellent condition that was recorded with great care in a large auditorium. This auditorium is a soundstage that is mainly used to broadcast live performances with very high acoustical standards. The room has a detailed ambience with a medium/long decay time.

Modern Upright features seven microphone perspectives ranging from close to far, floor to soundboard and mono to stereo. This gives you nearly limitless sound design options and lets you tailor the sound of the piano to the exact needs of your song, all within the Addictive Keys engine.

Accurate and Intelligent

During the research phase of Addictive Trigger, users around the world reported that accurate hit detection is absolutely critical when using drum replacement plugins. Unfortunately, existing triggering technologies tend to have shortcomings that require lots of manual tweaking and correction.

We endeavor to make products that are better than what is currently available, and we ended up creating an entirely new method for drum hit detection called Audio Fingerprint. Our new system uses FFT analysis to accurately identify drum sounds even if there is a lot of mic bleed or background noise in the source material.

It’s fast, it’s accurate, and we think it’ll change the way you work with live-recorded drums.

What is Audio Fingerprint?

Typical drum replacement tools rely on rudimentary filtering and transient detection, resulting in many false triggers and missed hits. Audio Fingerprint solves this problem by using a novel FFT-based matching system.

It is so accurate, it usually has no trouble detecting lightly played ghost notes from background noise while simultaneously rejecting mic bleed and other unwanted sounds.

In addition to detecting low level ghost notes with great accuracy, our Audio Fingerprint system can also differentiate between different stroke types that are played at similar velocities (for example, sidestick and open snare hits). This lets Addictive Trigger play back the correct articulations of samples, even if the incoming source material has different kinds of drum hits with similar peak levels.

SuperStart, SuperFast

Super Smart Automatic Hit Detection

Once you have inserted Addictive Trigger on an audio track, simply click SuperStart and begin playback in your host software. Addictive Trigger listens to your track for several seconds, analyzes the incoming hits and automatically sets a number of different parameters based on the source material. In most cases, this is all you need to do in order to have accurate hit detection happening on your track.

Svenska Grammofonstudion – Gothenburg

How do you get that warm beautiful analogue indie sound in a digital drum production software? You go proper old school:

First, you take it to Svenska Grammofon Studion’s warm, organic 120m2 live room, with 10m high walls covered in old fashioned oak tiles, giving the room the kind of short, rich decay that’s perfect for drums.

Second, you enlist the help of their impressive collection of vintage gear, and if you want old school, Svenska Grammofon has a lot. From the outboard, and microphones to old Steinway uprights and rare Fender amps to Fairchild compressors and Pultec EQ’s, every piece of equipment you normally only see emulated in a plugin, is there in real life.

Third, you run it through a beautiful old desk, and they don’t come much more majestic than “The Queen”, a Neve 8048 console with 1081, 1064 and 1073 preamps, that was once owned by Queen themselves, and which has been used by rock royalty like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones.

Finally, you capture the beautiful sounds distilled through this process on a Studer A80 2″ Tape Machine.

Is it really worth all that effort? If you want vibrant, organic, punchy and warm with just the right amount of grit. Yes, it is. Drums on tape just sound better.

Custom kit – ICE Custom Shop

This hand made ICE Custom Shop modern vintage rock kit, with its fresh “old school” shells and vintage Slingerland hardware didn’t really need the blue sparkle paint job for you to know it was a cool character, you can hear it right away in the sound. We introduced it to a Premier Keith Moon signature snare “The Spirit of Lily”, part of the rare 8 piece signature kit, and they got along just fine. After a lot of experiments, we found the Paiste 2002 and Signature series, and a vintage Zildjian K 15″ hi-hat made the perfect companions. But there’s more to this ADpak than a really cool drum kit, the real magic happened when we warmed it up in the studio by running it through analogue tape.

To capture all this percussive goodness, XLN Audio went to Svenska Grammofon Studion’s huge live room, with its impressive 10 meter-high ceiling, and took advantage of its equally huge and impressive selection of vintage mics. To those in the know, the words Neumann U47, U67 and M49 will start the juices flowing, add the fact that those mics were all run through a Neve 8048 console with 1081, 1064 and 1073 preamps, and XLN were in full audio-geek drool territory. If you’re not impressed by numbers, just have a listen to these sounds, and what they can do when the right MIDI is run through them. Congas and timbales playing totally new grooves, with a vibrant organic feel you’ll never get from regular percussion sample libraries… ¡Agua!

Handpicked Percussion Kit

This ADpak comes with the obligatory Latin set of a pair of congas, Tito Puente timbales, LP wood block, plastic block and tambourine, plus a Brazilian Caixa snare and pandeiro and a large orchestral bass drum. Played on their own to add flavour to your productions, or slotted into other ADpaks as interesting additions, these sounds are rich and punchy and sit nicely in the mix.

But this is no ordinary percussion set. We put it together to act as a super unique, fully functioning drum kit with the congas and timbales as toms, and the pandeiro working as a hi-hat. The obvious kick and snare are the Caixa and bass drum, but the different slap styles of the pandeiro can easily be split over kick, snare and hi-hat, for some bad-ass samba business. We tested a lot of cymbals and hi-hats to choose the perfect set to complement this crazy percussive set, giving you a completely different way to hear any drum pattern you want to feed it.

Oh, and it was all hand-picked and tuned by metal legend Ross Robinson for the recording sessions. No biggie!

Soundtrade Studios – Stockholm

A kit like this, hewn from the forest, needs some space around it, so XLN Audio put it in the biggest one we could find. Soundtrade is Stockholm’s oldest and largest surviving studio, and over the years everyone from ABBA to Childish Gambino has come here to take advantage of its massive 100 square metre studio 1 live room’s world-class acoustics. Basically, anything you put into this room sounds great, and this Wacco kit is no exception.

The Kit – A Boutique Wacco

Take one look at this kit and you know it’s going to sound different. Drums don’t come a lot more organic than these Finnish beauties. Since 1998 Wacco has turned out beautiful wooden kicks, toms and snares (some literally carved out from single slices of tree), heat-treated, beautifully finished with natural satin oil, and tuned to perfection with traditional rope-tensioned lugs to give a natural sound like no other. To finish it off, we paired the kit with dry cymbals from the Meinl Byzance series, trashy and low with a sandblasted smoothness. It’s the kind attention to detail that shines through in the sound. Warm and natural, and as organic as the stuff it’s made of. All the drums in this ADpak were played with both sticks and mallets, with atmospheric cymbal swells to swish you into a whole new direction. Soft and folky, deep and different. Yamaha CP-80 Electric Grand Piano:

Our Electric Grand instrument features a meticulously sampled Yamaha CP-80, an electro-acoustic instrument that was produced from the late 1970s through the mid 1980s. 

Electric grand pianos have hammers and strings just like acoustic pianos. However, unlike acoustic pianos, these pianos have pickups under the strings that feed the sound to an amplifier—just like an electric guitar or bass. The combination of acoustic, electric, and amplified sources let you craft unique piano-like textures that that are more harmonically complex and interesting than a typical acoustic piano. 

The Addictive Keys engine plays back the instrument with incredible detail and the advanced studio effects accurately model the tremolo and tone controls of the original instrument. In addition, it lets you push the sonic boundaries beyond what the original instrument could accomplish.

We recorded the CP-80 in several ways to maximize options for our outstanding team of sound designers.

Direct (Line Out):

• We recorded the direct output cleanly as well as through a well-maintained vintage Roland Dimension-D hardware chorus. 

Amplified Output:

• We played the CP-80 through a Music Man 112 RD tube combo amp with three close microphones and one stereo ambience microphone set further back to capture the room’s sound. 

Acoustic Strings:

• Although rarely heard on albums, we loved the acoustic sound of the CP-80’s strings and recorded it in stereo. 

These seven different recording setups gave our sound designers the ability to craft all kinds of amazing presets. You too can easily create inspiring presets that are uniquely yours.

XLN Audio wanted to be able to capture the sounds of this classic kit in beautiful isolation. Situated on a small island in the centre of Stockholm, Riksmixningsverket is one of the best sounding old naval warehouses in the industry. And at its centre is a classic analogue heart through which to capture some sweet sonic love, the Neve 8068 console. Old desks like these do something magical to music, they give their own character, enforce the punchiness and thickness of the sounds. It’s hard to put into words, but your ears can definitely tell.

Classic Kit – Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple kit

An absolute classic. Clean and crisp and smooth like butter. This Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple kit is made of sheets of Maple ply wrapped around a single layer of African Wenge hardwood, delivering a finely tuned tone that plays rich and clear across the full dynamic range. However you want to hear them, slamming out the breaks, or simmering in the back, they have the perfectly balanced sound to sit super comfortably in the mix.

For snares, XLN Audio felt they needed two. A deep Longo Solid Ply Cherry for big, fat hits and thick side sticks and a shallower, high tuned 1968 Ludwig Acrolite for tighter, snappier hits. To top it off, we hand-picked smooth Meinl cymbals to glue the whole kit together, wrapped in warmth and balanced highs.

Authentic 1970s Studio Drums

INGRID – Stockholm

Walking into Ingrid Studios is like walking into a time capsule. The place was built in 1969, and while stacks of hits have been recorded within its wooden walls, including ABBAs first album, almost nothing about the studio has physically changed in all that time. The place still oozes seventies flavour out of every surface, and sounds like nowhere else XLN Audio has ever been, capable of capturing both the dry, light, tight drum sound of the early ’70s and the thicker, fatter beats that disco brought towards the end of the decade.

To ensure Ingrid’s impeccable ’70s character is not polluted, no gear made since the ’80s is allowed to pass through the doors, making the drum sounds XLN captured for this ADpak as close as you can get to the ’70s without a modified DeLorean and 1.21 gigawatts of electricity.

Vintage Drum Kit – 1968 Ludwig Silver Sparkle Kit

It doesn’t get much more ’70s than this. The 1968 Ludwig Silver Sparkle is like the drum kit equivalent of a glitter ball, and it’ll make you feel just as groovy. But to get the sort of authentic ’70s drum sound that’s been brought back into vogue by artists like Daft Punk and Justice, XLN pulled out all the retro tricks. They started by tuning and dampening the individual drums using authentic ’70s methods: The kick was stuffed with a pillow and a large sheet of felt. Newspaper was taped to the snare heads and more felt sheets were pinned to the toms. Then, to ensure audio authenticity, XLN Audio recorded it using only microphones from the 1960-70s (Coles, Neumann, Sennheiser and Bang & Olufsen) sent through the studio’s vintage API console.

XLN Audio wanted to make sure that with just a few clicks, our users could add world-class drums to their productions, and have full control over them, almost as if they’d been at the recording session themselves. To begin with, they carefully hand-selected each kit, piece by piece, to get just the right sound. Then XLN Audio found just the right space to record each kit. A studio with the right mix of acoustics, gear, drummer and engineers to coax the best out of it, make it sing, and capture its essence.

Every kit was meticulously recorded with a variety of strokes sampled for each piece. Snares were recorded from above, and below. Kicks from the front, and from the rear near the beater. The sound coming back from the live room was recorded separately on stereo mics. All these signals are combined in the software to give you amazingly real live-sounding drums. If you want to hear these drums at their very best, the ADpak comes with a host of presets configured for specific drum sounds, or you can take full control and control every aspect of the individual drums. Dial-up the room noise for some stadium rock epicness. Tune the toms to vibe with your keys. Turn up the overheads, add distortion, or reverb, change the attack…the possibilities are literally endless.

XLN Audio wanted to make sure that with just a few clicks, users could add world-class drums to their productions, and have full control over them, almost as if they’d been at the recording session themselves. To begin with, XLN carefully hand-selected each kit, piece by piece, to get just the right sound. Then they found just the right space to record each kit. A studio with the right mix of acoustics, gear, drummer and engineers to coax the best out of it, make it sing, and capture its essence.

Every kit was meticulously recorded with a variety of strokes sampled for each piece. Snares were recorded from above, and below. Kicks from the front, and from the rear near the beater. The sound coming back from the live room was recorded separately on stereo mics. All these signals are combined in the software to give you amazingly real live-sounding drums. If you want to hear these drums at their very best, the ADpak comes with a host of presets configured for specific drum sounds, or you can take full control and control every aspect of the individual drums. Dial-up the room noise for some stadium rock epicness. Tune the toms to vibe with your keys. Turn up the overheads, add distortion, or reverb, change the attack…the possibilities are literally endless.

Custom Kit – Tama Starclassic

To put it simply, this kit rocks! The Studio Rock ADpak is based around a Japan-made Tama Starclassic kit, a world-class set of drums that can lend itself to pretty much any style of music. XLN added the extra option of a slightly shallower Pearl kick as well as a Pearl Signature Ferrone Snare in addition to the 14″ Starclassic one.

XLN Audio tested a load of cymbals, and eventually ended up including three different Sabian Crashes (17, 18 &19″), a 22″ Paiste 3000 Ride, a little 10″ Sabian HHX Legacy Splash, an 18″ Sabian AAX China Cymbal for bright, crisp, explosive trashy hits, and a set of 14″ Paiste Dark Crisp Hi-Hats. Oh, and an LP Rock Ridge Rider Cowbell, for when you need more Cowbell.

About Mark One

Our Mark One Instrument is based on a Fender Rhodes Mk. 1 electric piano. This king of electric pianos is played through a vintage tube combo amp and captured by rare vintage mics for a sublime sound. The tone can go from a smooth enthralling caress to a searing, crunchy sound that cuts through the densest mix.

The Instrument and its Presets – Fender Rhodes Mk. 1 Stage Piano:

Our Mark One instrument is based on a Fender Rhodes Mk. 1 electric piano. The Rhodes Mk. 1 has been the most popular electric piano for more than four decades and is heard on countless hit records. Rhodes pianos can vary in sound, and this particular instrument was selected for its unmistakable warmth and intimacy. 

While the instrument’s line output can be recorded “direct,” it is often played through an amplifier to add some crunch and character. For this recording, we used a MusicMan 112 RD Fifty 1×12″. Different recording setups can be mixed and matched to give you endless sound design options!

With the tube combo set up in a large recording room, vintage microphones was positioned at both close and far away perspective capturing the amp close-up and with natural ambience. To add variety, three mics were positioned next up to the speaker; a dynamic, a tube condenser and a ribbon microphone. One floor and one room microphone setup were used for the option of adding depth and ambience to the recordings. 

In addition to the acoustical recordings, two line signals were also recorded: One “direct” through high-voltage DI box and another through the classic Roland Dimension D analog stereo chorus.

Ross Robinson Studios – Los Angeles

When you think of a metal studio you might not think of sunny Venice Beach California but that’s where Ross Robinson creates his raw in-to-the-bone sound. Known as The Godfather of Nu Metal, Robinson is world-renowned for his production skills, having presided over seminal albums for bands like Sepultura and Limp Bizkit as well as discovering bands like Korn, Slipknot, and Limp Bizkit. His place in the pantheon of metal is unquestioned.

As a producer, Ross always pushes a band (sometimes physically) all the way to their limits to get to the core of the realest and rawest performances. He often records the whole band gathered tight around the drums, feeling their energy as the heartbeat of the song, and to make sure everyone feels the raw power of the drummer, he built “The Grotto”, a small room whose walls and floor are covered in actual ROCK! The punch and rawness Ross gets out of this man-made drum cave is elemental magic.

Custom Kit – Ludwig Classic Maple

This 18 piece kit delivers the goods in any style of Metal. It comprises thunderous maple toms, and a heavy kick from Ludwig, vicious Zildjian cymbals and a sharp balanced snare from Gretsch, made of HAMMERED METAL, just in case you needed convincing! Seeing as this ADpak is designed to allow you to go all in, we’ve added a special feature that’s a must for the modern Metal producer; “Trig” samples (recorded with extra attack and shorter decay) for putting in the Xtra slot and beefing out the kick and snare.

When you’re working on progressive rock, or experimental music with complex rhythms, and intricate playing, you need a high-end kit capable of capturing both subtle nuance and powerful punchiness. XLN went to the flagship line from DW, the Collector’s Series. It’s like the Rolls Royce of drum kits. The shells are cold-pressed for extra stiffness and extra resonance, and intense attention is paid to every detail in the construction process. Each shell is tapped in the factory to test its natural frequency, which is then stamped on the inside, so it can be tuned up to the precise note it was born to sing.

The Instrument and its Presets

Steinway Model D Grand Piano:

Our Studio Grand features a Steinway Model D Concert Grand piano. At 8′ 11 3/4″ (274cm) in length, this majestic instrument is the overwhelming choice of the world’s greatest pianists. More than ten Steinway Grand Pianos were auditioned before finding the one with the most desirable character: a crystal clear and open timbre with a perfectly balanced resonance. 

We approached Studio Grand with production in mind. We found that fitting a grand piano in a mix can be hard and often results in a compromise of the sound quality in order to make it fit with the other instruments and vocals. By offering the exact recording setup in Addictive Keys and the option of mixing and matching microphones, Studio Grand is sure to fit nicely into any production style.

Studio Grand was recorded in a large recording studio at the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation. The studio is famous for being extremely quiet and for having a controlled acoustic ambience; for such a large room the reverberation still sounds tight and airy which is a rare combination and the perfect condition for recording a grand piano. 

The recordings were done using rare vintage tube and ribbon microphones capturing the instrument at several different perspectives. From close up perspective with microphones next to the soundboard to far away perspective with natural room ambience. The end result is a warm and vibrant sound that goes from intimate to larger-than-life. The vintage microphones used were hand picked from the studios impressive collection.
