Things – Motor

MORPHING ROTOR EFFECT

Motor is a plugin effect that uses side-chaining to combine signals in new and interesting ways: put in any two signals and they will dance around each other like courting birds drunk on fermented cherries. Use it to gentle morph between sounds or rhythmically cut them up, affecting both volume and spatial position. Add life to the plainest signals with vibrato, or destroy them in interesting ways with extreme modulation speeds.

MAIN FEATURES

  • Signal chopper
  • Tremolo, Vibrato, Panner
  • Multi-wave LFO (Sine, Triangle, Ramp Up, Ramp Down, Square, Sine Up, Sine Down, Exp Up, Exp Down, S&H)
  • LFO Start/Stop with Speed Control
  • Resizable Window

Where does it come from?

Like our previous collaboration with Hainbach (the Soviet spy recorder turned echo, Wires), Motors takes cues from history: “The Crystal Palace” built by Dave Young for the BBC Radiophonic workshop. This one-of-a-kind tool allowed speed-dependent switching of up to sixteen audio channels. It did so in an almost steampunk fashion, by employing a big capacitor rotating on a Motor. The effects it created reached from sublime to almost granular, a major achievement at the time. You can hear it on the soundtrack to the Doctor Who episode “The Krotons” by Brian Hodgson and Delia Derbyshire.

What is new?

Things Motor focuses and expands on this peculiar tool by allowing the combination of two signals via sidechain, which makes it work easily across platforms. Switching is controlled via a variable waveshape LFO instead of the fixed physical waveform of the original. This allows for smooth morphing or aggressively chopped sounds, and worlds in between. You can even use it for audio rate modulation of signals, which results in ring-modulation-like artifacts.

To make it a truly versatile tool, we added a vibrato and a panner synced to the “motor” LFO, as well as some of our classic analog-like sound shaping. Together with the variable time on the motor start/stop this becomes the sound morphing rotary effect you never know you needed – until you hear it. Crystal Palace BBC Photo by Ray White

The past melts into the present

While the original Crystal Palace might not be heard in public again, with Things Motor you get a modern take on a classic tool. Bringing avant-garde techniques of the past to a modern audience is one of Hainbach’s main interests on his channel, and we are happy to have partnered up with him on this. But it does not end here: if you are interested in a real-live recreation of this, watch Look Mum No Computers video, who started building his take on it in tandem with us.

Pan Knob

Why do I need a plugin for a tool that every daw has?

Yes, this plugin is a pan knob in plugin format. But the truth is, the way traditional pan knobs work kind of sucks for headphone listeners, and according to polls, about 87% of people listen to their music on headphones.

Have you ever listened to a mix that had one instrument panned hard to one side? It sounds ok on monitors, but sounds awful on headphones. That’s because traditional panning don’t take headphone listeners into consideration.

Have you ever heard a mix where you have two distinct guitar tones panned to opposite sides, but one dominates the low end and makes the entire mix feel lopsided? That’s because traditional panning treats all frequencies equally, even though our ears don’t.

Pan Knob overcomes this by having a smarter panning algorithm. One that keeps your low frequencies unpanned so that it sounds natural in headphones.

It doesn’t do any room simulation, so it isn’t going to mess up your mono mixdown.

MAIN FEATURES

  • Better Panning algorithm for all listening formats
  • Choose pan law
  • Switch between Balance/Pan
  • Pan anywhere in your signal chain

Convenient options

Aside from just sounding better, it has a few options to make it more convenient to use. It has a quick “Pan Swap” that will give you the opposite panning position with the click of a button. It has quick one button settings for the most used pan positions. You can choose which pan law is used, and choose between Balance and Pan for your stereo tracks.

Beyond 100%

Sometimes you need to pan a little wider than 100% to either side. Pan Knob lets you go to 120%, to give extra width when you need it.

More Panning Opportunities

When panning with Pan Knob, a whole new world of panning is opened up to you as a mixer. Because it sounds natural wherever you pan your tracks, you aren’t limited by the traditional panning rules that have become standard. You can pan any tracks wherever you want while keeping it sounding good and natural.

Stereoplacer

Pan control for the 21st century. Choose the frequencies you want to fix and move them anywhere, leaving the rest of the stereo image intact. Make improvements in any area of the sound stage without causing problems elsewhere. Stereoplacer gives you precise control you just can’t get within a traditional mix setup. Stereoplacer is an advanced fine-tune parametric balancing control. You can tune each band into specific frequencies and move the frequency content around in the stereo sound stage. Just choose the position you want, and let Stereoplacer take care of preserving the balance of the original sounds. With fully adjustable curves (bell, high and low shelving and even additional linked-harmonic overtones) you can redistribute stereo information with subtlety, or make powerful corrections – even moving hard-panned frequencies from one side to the other – without affecting the overall level balance of the material. Brightness Panner

Brightness Panner is committed to changing the way you use sound in space, enriching your mixes by spreading sound around you.

This unique audio plugin makes panning easier than ever, by applying movement to your sounds using Brightness analysis.

Frequency Controls Panning

Imagine panning being controlled by the pitch of music notes, the brightness of sounds or the MIDI notes you play. From music to audio post, Brightness Panner allows you to move sounds dynamically in a variety of reproduction formats — from stereo to surround 5.1 and 7.1, to Dolby Atmos 7.1.2, Ambisonics up to 3rd order, and Binaural.

Panning Mode

The Pan mode is essentially a normal end-to-end particle-based panning. This type of panning effect changes the position of the sound source between two points (start point -> end point) previously defined by you. Therefore, greater brightness or pitch shifts of the incoming signal, the greater the shift from the starting point to the end point.

Sliding Mode

Whenever the audio signal is within the frequency or pitch range, the sound source moves on a trajectory that you define. As opposed to pan mode, the sound source does not return to the starting point as soon as the signal falls outside that range. The sound source will freeze that position until the audio signal is back within the range again, leading to a new shift of the sound source in the dome space.

MAIN FEATURES

  • Brightness Analysis
  • Pitch Analysis
  • MIDI Analysis
  • Visualization Dome
  • Randomization

Brightness Analysis
Brightness Panner analyzes the spectrum of sounds in order to pan them in 3D according to a range of frequencies set by the user.

Pitch Analysis
Brightness Panner identifies the pitch of individual notes and pans them in 3D according to a range of pitch values set by the user.

MIDI Analysis
Brightness Panner receives MIDI notes and pans sounds in 3D according to a range of MIDI notes set by the user. Dynamic Movement Easily set how the sounds will move. For instance, will they move from the speakers position to the centre or will they move clockwise starting from a custom position?

Visualization Dome
Track every single movement the sounds are making through the main component of the plugin’s UI: the dome.

Randomization
Running out of ideas? Don’t worry! The Brightness Panner has a randomize option that outputs a new result each time you click it.

Stereoplacer Elements

Effortless & essential

Stereoplacer Elements is a simplified version of our Stereoplacer plug-in, allowing the same frequency-specific panoramic placement, in a lightweight package.

MAIN FEATURES

  • Reconstruct a stereo image from mono
  • Fix poor stereo microphone placement
  • Restore archive recordings
  • Tidy up samples from old records

The rest of the stereo image will remain intact, and the balance of original sounds will be preserved.

Stereo Spectrum Analysis

The graphical display in Stereoplacer Elements can be used as a Stereo differential spectrum analyser. Leaving controls in their default positions will set up the plugin in analysis mode. The incoming sound is not affected, but is analysed for stereo content, which is then displayed visually.

‘Panning’ Bass.

Panning bass sounds is usually something best avoided as off-centre high energy in the low frequencies can present more problems than it resolves. However, using Stereoplacer Elements, the low frequencies present in say a bass guitar track, can be left centre while the higher frequencies (i.e. much of the attack component) can be moved in the stereo field with a shelving band, without the usual problems of the attending lows, giving the impression that the bass part has been panned, when really it is only the high, directional information carrying frequencies that have been moved.

Available formats

  • We support AAX, VST3, AU and AudioSuite in 64-bit.

Energy Panner

Energy Panner uses the intensity of a sound to control its movement.

From traditional stereo to immersive, this plugin enables artists to add dynamic depth to their panning techniques without any effort or additional routing.

Sound Intensity Controls Panning
With Energy Panner, the sound intensity controls the panner, creating movement that reacts to sound. Imagine drums moving at the beat, synth notes that move on attack, among many other behaviours. From music to audio post, from stereo to Dolby Atmos, Energy Panner is a plugin that you definitely want in your toolset.

Panning Mode
The Pan mode is essentially a normal end-to-end particle-based panning. This type of panning effect changes the position of the sound source between two points (start point -> endpoint) previously defined by you. Therefore, the greater the energy of the input signal the greater the shift from the starting point to the endpoint.

Sliding Mode
Whenever the audio signal reaches a certain level (threshold value), the sound source moves on a trajectory that you define. As opposed to pan mode, the sound source does not return to the starting point as soon as the signal level drops. The sound source will freeze that position until the audio signal exceeds the threshold value again, leading to a new shift of the sound source in the dome space.

MAIN FEATURES

  • Stereo, Immersive & Binaural Outputs: From stereo, 7.1, HOA to Binaural and Dolby Atmos, Energy Panner gives you several output options based on virtual microphones technology.
  • Dynamic Movement: Easily set how the sounds will move. For instance, will they move from the speakers position to the centre or will they move clockwise starting from a custom position?
  • Sidechain: Use external signals to control the effect of the plugin instead of using the track’s sound for this.
  • Visualization Dome: Track every single movement the sounds are making through the main component of the plugin’s UI: the dome.
  • Randomization: Running out of ideas? Don’t worry! The Energy Panner has a randomize option that outputs a new result each time you click it.
  • Absolute Control: Energy Panner brings you all the options you need to have complete control over how the sounds are moving in the panoramic field.

FilterShaper 3

A Detailed, Interconnected Toolbox for Shaping Your Sound

FilterShaper 3 takes a giant leap into unconventional sound design with two powerful filters, freely editable modulation curves, and an immensely flexible modulation framework.

The new Sallen-Key type filters deliver a rich, warm, intricate sound. Create complex, shifting, interweaving effects. Apply subtle nuances or giant wobbles. From filter sweeps and stereo tremolo to surgically-precise filter control and multiband sidechain effects.

Experiment and Explore – Start with two filters, running in serial or in parallel, plus a set of simple controls. Then set things in motion: All main controls have their own modulation section with two flexible LFOs and one envelope follower each. For advanced effects editing, each LFO in turn has its own speed and intensity control — each with its own LFO and envelope follower. And all LFOs can be MIDI triggered. Visual feedback on each control and oscilloscope views on each LFO keep you focused. And a community-powered, ever-growing library of presets provides starting points and inspiration for your own sounds.

Total Precision Control – FilterShaper 3 excels at surgically precise control. For pinpoint tweaking of the modulation curve and a close-up oscilloscope view, open up the detail panel. Filter out a specific beat in a loop. Tame a booming kick. Or shape a tired sample into something lively and vibrant. You have two filters, 60 LFOs, and 50 envelope followers at your fingertips — a detailed, interconnected toolbox for shaping your sound.

Advanced Multiband Sidechain Effects – As well as pinpoint editing, pulsing rhythmic effects, and left-field, alien craziness, FilterShaper 3 can deliver flexible, precisely timed sidechain compression effects. For multiband sidechain, set up filter one to manage the lows and assign filter two to the highs. Duck out the bass when the kick hits, take out the highs to emphasize a snare — simply draw the curve for each as required.

HalfTime

Instant Creative Half-Speed Effect

For Trap • EDM • Hip-Hop • Techno • House • And More

Enter a world of spaced-out, slowed-down sound with HalfTime, the only plugin 100% dedicated to half-speed effects, in use by Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, members of 808 Mafia, The Chemical Brothers and more.

HalfTime transforms any audio into a dark, downtempo version of itself, giving your tracks huge mood and atmosphere. Lead synths mutate into heavyweight EDM bass monsters. Plinky piano lines become haunting trap melodies. Percussion thickens, expanding to reveal new rhythmic possibilities.

Just add the plugin for an instant half-speed effect with zero set-up, or go in deep with powerful creative controls. HalfTime works on loops, virtual instruments or even live audio input, inspiring you in seconds.

The hands-on ‘Power’ button makes it easy to fit HalfTime into your tracks – create a rapid switch or sink in slowly with smooth fades up to 16 bars.

Three-speed ‘Modes’ give you classic half-speed, tight harmonies and shuffling swing rhythms, and drugged-out quad-time playback. Adjustable ‘Loop’ length allows multi-bar slow-downs, funky syncopations and totally new grooves.

Slow only the lows, mids or highs with the ‘Band’ split – generate deep bass movement, fatten midrange percussion, or flip your top-end on its head.

Features

  • Instant setup: Add the plugin – get an instant half-speed effect with no further setup.
  • Power button: Punch the large central button to activate the effect – automate in your DAW.
  • Fade In/Out: Introduce the effect instantly, or fade in gradually, across up to 16 bars.

  • Band Split: Half-speed just the bass, treble or midrange for trippy effects.
  • Band Solo: Hear just the slowed frequency range – use it to hone the effect, as a filter, or to blend using the Mix control.
  • Dry/Wet Mix: Blend the original and slowed audio.
  • Loop Length: Set the Loop from 1/16 up to 8 bars – keep the original timing, stretch it to half speed, or create catchy new rhythms.
  • Smooth: Preserve transient punch with ‘Percussive’ mode, and avoid clicks and pops on sustained material with ‘Sustain’ mode. Or push it to extremes with creative FX and Swell options.

MidiShaper

Bring The Flexibility Of Curve To Your Plugins & Hardware Synths

Powered by Curve’s unique modulations engine, MidiShaper brings Curve’s flexible yet powerful LFOs and envelopes to all your favourite synthesizers and effects.

Four LFOs and four envelope generators work together in a sophisticated modulations matrix that can be set up to output modulated pitch, mod-wheel, channel aftertouch or any MIDI control messages.

MidiShaper’s LFOs can run infinitely or be retriggered, synced to your DAW from a buzzy 1/128 to an expansive 32 bars, set to the played note, or run from 0.02 Hz up to the audible range and brain frequency. Like Curve, MidiShaper features completely editable waveforms for its LFOs.

If your plugin or DAW allows for MIDI control, you have a great tool at hand to create vivid, inspiring sounds and bring the flexibility of Curve to your favourite software plugins, hardware synthesizers, MIDI VJ tools, lighting consoles and 1980’s MIDI keyboards.

Routing MidiShaper – MidiShaper outputs MIDI data. Routing MidiShaper to external outboard equipment is simple to do via external MIDI ports.

Using MidiShaper to control software instruments and effects can be relatively simple as in Reaper and Ableton Live, can be complex with pitfalls as in Apple Logic, or might require some special tricks as in Sonar. It all depends on how well the DAW of your choice handles internal MIDI routings and automation. Also please note that not all plugins support automation of their parameters.

If you succeed, you’ll get super-flexible LFOs and envelopes added to your favourite hardware devices, to your sequencer’s controls and to your software synthesizers and effects.

Pana

Natural Panner – A pan knob for the human ear

Pana is a sophisticated stereo tool designed to let you do more elegant, natural audio positioning than what regular balance panning might accomplish.

Panning an audio signal can be done in several ways, where the most common is to alter the volume on one channel. This is a CPU-efficient way (and many times the best) to achieve a sense of positioned audio. Almost every DAW and mixing console has this feature built-in.

Another way is to add a short delay to one of the channels – the Haas method. This renders a richer sound, but can also make a sound come off as somewhat unnatural.

A more elegant way is to apply a low pass filter to one of the channels. This maintains the audio energy on both channels, but at the same time makes it sound positioned. This works very well on transient rich sounds like drums or other percussive instruments.

Pana uses both the delaying and filtering methods in combination, to achieve a more natural positioning. This makes Pana a very versatile tool for most types of sounds – and having these features in one plug-in makes for a great mixing experience. To top it all off, there’s also a crossover filter that makes it possible to leave the low-end frequencies completely untouched, letting the bass remain fully centered, to prevent the mix from tipping over on one side.

  • 1. Pan the mic – The pan knob in Pana is actually more of a macro controller, controlling multiple parameters for filter and micro delay.
  • 2. Set your head size – Binaural hearing (how humans perceive sound) is highly dependent on time difference between the ears, rather than sound level difference (as set by a normal pan knob). This time difference is bigger if you have a large head. To feel smarter, turn this knob to the right.
  • 3. Keep your bottom in the middle – To prevent the mix from “tipping over”, you can keep the low frequencies in the middle.
  • 4. Steepen the curve – Apart from time difference, binaural hearing also relies on the filtering of high frequencies on the opposite side of the sound source. This knob controls that.
  • 5. Not just a phase – For checking the mono compatibility, if your audio signals are in or out of phase.

Features

  • Adjustable micro-delay, tuned after human head size (variable size)
  • Adjustable low-pass filter on opposite channel
  • Bass crossover filter, keeps high-energy low frequencies in the center (to prevent the mix from tipping)
  • Quick button for checking mono compatibility
  • Correlation meter for checking the phase
  • Pan lock – for locking the pan knob when browsing presets
  • A collection of ready-made presets
  • macOS 10.10 or later (optimized for the M1-processor)
  • Windows 7 SP1 or later
  • AU, VST-2, VST-3, AAX
