Create shaker patterns as played by a human being

Skaka is a sample-based sequencer plugin for shaker percussion instruments. It has 12 slots, each with its own instrument, parameters (lots of them!), and pattern. Klevgrand has built both the sequencer and the sampler from the ground, to optimize this instrument for these types of sounds. Each pattern contains events, with individual parameters like pitch, velocity (as in how fast the instrument is shaken), and envelope.

With full control over shuffle/swing amount, an advanced humanizer function, internal awareness of in- and out shakes (yes, they sound different), using grids divided into triplets/quintuplets/septuplets, timing fine-tuning and variable sequence lengths, Skaka can get very close to how a human percussionist would sound in almost any tempo without any use of degrading time stretching or similar techniques.

To top it off, there’s a nice reverb, a room simulator, and a high-shelf filter. Skaka comes with nearly 200 ready-made patterns covering most genres and styles.

Simmons drums were used on countless recordings during the 1980s across many genres, from disco, to reggae, to chart-topping pop hits. In recent years their distinctive sound has been given new life in synthwave and other ‘80s inspired genres.

Brushed Percussion 

Borsta is a new innovative percussion instrument specially designed for strokes and brushes. Its unique audio engine allows for an endless number of truly natural-sounding brushing phrases and rhythms. What sets Borsta apart from similar instruments is that its audio engine supports continuous changes in intensity. This makes it possible to create very life-like brushing phrases and patterns, something that can’t be achieved with traditional sample-based instruments.

The parallel envelope and events sequencers allow you to determine exactly when to start a stroke, how the stroke’s pressure/speed should evolve over time and when to end it. On top of that, all instruments also offers multi-sampled one-shots with advanced choking capabilities. Each instrument is based on more than 400 high-quality samples, recorded for playing with different velocities and round robins.

Borsta emulates a single drum instrument at a time, but comes with 18 different instruments to choose between. The sequences are played one at a time, however switching between sequences can be done seamlessly via MIDI, and additional one-shot samples can be triggered using an ordinary MIDI track.

Maple drums have become the industry standard over the last few decades appreciated for their dryer sound with shorter sustain.

We chose the Yamaha Maple Custom drums for this VST Instrument for they have a warm, recording studio character and pack plenty of punch. It has also become one of the most sought-after kits by drummers and studios worldwide therefore we had to capture it for Handy Drums series.

This kit is suitable for most contemporary music styles, it’s a great all-rounder and a definite must-have.

These drums sound more “close up” due to their crispy presence and short sustain. The snare is snappy and at the same time deep with a real sizzly snare wire character coming through. The kick is weighty, short and punches through the speakers. The shorter depth toms have a clear note but get out of the way even faster and really sing out on the louder hits.

The hi-hats and cymbals have plenty of presence and blend perfectly with the rest of the drums. If you were stomped for choice for which kit to start with, the Studio Standard is certainly the main contender.

Boom also has an on-board sequencer that enables you to create and trigger your own patterns, which can be saved and recalled as presets.

You can select different patterns using the keys along the bottom of the interface, when you’re in Pattern Select mode, and these are conveniently color ‘coded to show you how they map to a MIDI keyboard from middle ‘C’ upwards for remote selection.

The Matrix display in the top left enables you to program a pattern, but if you prefer you can also use the keys along the bottom, this time with Pattern Edit mode selected.

You’ll find some nice touches, such as the ability to copy one pattern to another, and some simple controls for adjusting the way in which the pattern plays back within your host: normal, double, half or triplet time, and there’s even a swing control mirroring classic MPC’s and other vintage drum machines/samplers.

Easy Access

The Kit Page provides the most important functions of the sound engine. Each of the eight kit channels provides a preset browser for the individual sound, controls for global pitch and decay, a modify knob and a profiled random function. Define a Mute group in oder to make a trigger on one engine choke the sound on another engine and use Choke Groups for open/closed hihat choking, but also for interesting synth sounds.

The Finalizer is a well balanced recipe of transient shaper, compressor, maximizer and saturation. Use it to bring out the Attacks of your drums and let the room breath.

Accurate and Intelligent

During the research phase of Addictive Trigger, users around the world reported that accurate hit detection is absolutely critical when using drum replacement plugins. Unfortunately, existing triggering technologies tend to have shortcomings that require lots of manual tweaking and correction.

We endeavor to make products that are better than what is currently available, and we ended up creating an entirely new method for drum hit detection called Audio Fingerprint. Our new system uses FFT analysis to accurately identify drum sounds even if there is a lot of mic bleed or background noise in the source material.

It’s fast, it’s accurate, and we think it’ll change the way you work with live-recorded drums.

What is Audio Fingerprint?

Typical drum replacement tools rely on rudimentary filtering and transient detection, resulting in many false triggers and missed hits. Audio Fingerprint solves this problem by using a novel FFT-based matching system.

It is so accurate, it usually has no trouble detecting lightly played ghost notes from background noise while simultaneously rejecting mic bleed and other unwanted sounds.

In addition to detecting low level ghost notes with great accuracy, our Audio Fingerprint system can also differentiate between different stroke types that are played at similar velocities (for example, sidestick and open snare hits). This lets Addictive Trigger play back the correct articulations of samples, even if the incoming source material has different kinds of drum hits with similar peak levels.

SuperStart, SuperFast

Super Smart Automatic Hit Detection

Once you have inserted Addictive Trigger on an audio track, simply click SuperStart and begin playback in your host software. Addictive Trigger listens to your track for several seconds, analyzes the incoming hits and automatically sets a number of different parameters based on the source material. In most cases, this is all you need to do in order to have accurate hit detection happening on your track.

How do you get that warm beautiful analogue indie sound in a digital drum production software? You go proper old school:

First, you take it to Svenska Grammofon Studion’s warm, organic 120m2 live room, with 10m high walls covered in old fashioned oak tiles, giving the room the kind of short, rich decay that’s perfect for drums.

Second, you enlist the help of their impressive collection of vintage gear, and if you want old school, Svenska Grammofon has a lot. From the outboard, and microphones to old Steinway uprights and rare Fender amps to Fairchild compressors and Pultec EQ’s, every piece of equipment you normally only see emulated in a plugin, is there in real life.

Third, you run it through a beautiful old desk, and they don’t come much more majestic than “The Queen”, a Neve 8048 console with 1081, 1064 and 1073 preamps, that was once owned by Queen themselves, and which has been used by rock royalty like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones.

Finally, you capture the beautiful sounds distilled through this process on a Studer A80 2″ Tape Machine.

Is it really worth all that effort? If you want vibrant, organic, punchy and warm with just the right amount of grit. Yes, it is. Drums on tape just sound better.

Custom kit – ICE Custom Shop

This hand made ICE Custom Shop modern vintage rock kit, with its fresh “old school” shells and vintage Slingerland hardware didn’t really need the blue sparkle paint job for you to know it was a cool character, you can hear it right away in the sound. We introduced it to a Premier Keith Moon signature snare “The Spirit of Lily”, part of the rare 8 piece signature kit, and they got along just fine. After a lot of experiments, we found the Paiste 2002 and Signature series, and a vintage Zildjian K 15″ hi-hat made the perfect companions. But there’s more to this ADpak than a really cool drum kit, the real magic happened when we warmed it up in the studio by running it through analogue tape.
