Bazille – Digital Modular Synthesis

Bazille is a large modular system combining digital oscillators with analogue-style filters and modelled effects, with a flexibility that only modular patching can provide.

After ACE, the second spawn of our ongoing ‘Berlin Modular’ project, this one is a very different, much larger beast…

Ultraflexible modules – Bazille is highly unusual for a modular synth.

Although the filters are traditional analogue models, the oscillators are unashamedly digital: They combine the two technologies that made digital synthesis affordable (and analogue synths suddenly unfashionable) in the 1980s – FM (frequency modulation, more correctly ‘phase modulation’) and PD (phase distortion).

In Bazille, each oscillator panel has five distinct sections:

• Pitch, Phase / FM

• Fractal Resonance
• and the Outputs

Since the 4 main oscillators have a frequency range which starts at zero Hertz, they can be used as synchronized or unsynchronized LFOs or also adopt custom shapes thanks to Bazille’s mapping generators. The oscillators are also capable of all kinds of FM sounds by plugging an audio-frequency source into the phase modulation input.

One of the most interesting features included in Bazille’s powerful oscillators is an unusual process we call Fractalize (fractal resonance). This can be used to create very bold sounds from tame waveforms, with a similar result to the classic cutting sound of the sync effect.

The two sound generators are deceptively basic looking. Number 1 is an emulation of an analogue oscillator with a unison functionality. The second oscillator uses FM synthesis with a flexible ratio. We implemented the unique possibility to rotate parameters and their motion lanes. Organic and complex sound changes just blossom around you with a tender touch of these faders. This feature can be modulated for endless evolving results.

Additionally, you can morph between two sequencer states (copy and paste between the two states is very useful!). That makes it possible to vary parts of a sequence while it repeats.

The clock tab regulates the master speed, swing & direction. Combine its 2 mini sequencers for clock and direction with the main sequencer for finestcolourfull rhythm tapestry.

Sequencer steps can be assigned to MIDI notes, playback speed and direction might change at any time. A different sound for each note of a melody and tumbling rhythms, rolls and triplets, ready to be explored.

Mix & Match Modules

Loom II delivers up to 512 harmonic partials per patch and uses an intuitive modular design to create complex sounds quickly and easily.

Each of the 34 editable modules performs a specific sonic task—Octaver, Second Tone, Moving Filter, Noise, Linear Lowpass, Modulator, etc.

The Loom II framework provides a series of cells, where up to 10 of these modules can interact combine to generate an additive synthesis patch. Each module includes task-specific parameters for detailed, individual control of the patch.

For real-time visual feedback of your sound, each module includes a spectrum window, offering a visual indication of how that module is affecting the individual harmonics of the sound.

In Loom II we have added four new powerful modules:

• 5-Sines – An easy-to-use module enabling you to produce a range of organ or sine style sounds.
• Discrete Adder – Similar to Loom 1’s popular adder, but adding a discrete spectrum ideal for creating percussion-based synth instruments.

Make Your Music Move

Loom II’s Morph Pad is a powerful tool that adds dynamics and movement to your patches. Using a condensed set of control knobs, Loom II enables you to quickly create up to four variations of your sound, and assign each one to different quadrant of the Morph Pad. Point, click, and drag anywhere on the Morph Pad to create a morph path.

As the sound moves along this patch, you will hear it morph in real time between your four variations. This morphing can be free-form, or set to sync up to a particular musical unit—1 bar, 4 bars, etc.

Plus, each segment of the morph path can be synced individually. In Loom II, we have expanded our highly-acclaimed morph pad by allowing Points/Paths to be stored and restored separately. We have also added a new X-Axis mode enabling it to perform like an envelope, which is ideal for rhythmical morph patterns.

For this new mode Snap/Grid is also available. Additionally, for expanded creativity you can now use parameters not linked to the Morph.

For over 8 years, Hilyard has been transporting listeners to serene and beautiful worlds with his impactful ambient music. Hilyard’s work has been part of the Cryo Chamber record label who focus on dark ambient and drone music. The effect of this music has been surprisingly wide reaching as is evident of Cryo Chamber’s 340K YouTube subscribers. Great for ambient music, soundtracks, drone and more

You might find Lost Reveries useful for creating music in some of these genres: ambient, drone, cinematic, meditation, music-for-sleep or soundtracks. But that isn’t its limit: we’ve also found that the smooth, semi-organic tones of Lost Reveries layer incredibly well with both real orchestration or as a backdrop for synthesisers.

32 ambient ‘oscillators’

With a typical subtractive synthesiser you might have oscillators like sawtooth, sine or square; in Lost Reveries the ‘oscillators’ are instead sample-based ambient tones. These ambient tones can be shaped using ADSR envelopes, filters and EQ, and layered with other ambient tones. Modulation can also be added using LFOs. Finally, the sound can be coloured using a rack of effects which includes reverb, distortion, chorus and phaser.

The samples are made by Hilyard, who used various tone-generation processes; including both real recordings and synthesisied elements. The end-goal was to create the core elements that you can use to design your own multi-layered ambient tones.

Smooth, pure, rich tones

The ambient-tone ‘oscillators’ are categorised into 4 sections: low, mid, air and vocal. The names of these categories suggest how you might use the tone; allowing you to more easily build multi-layered tracks. The vocal category contains ambient tones that resonate similarly to how the human voice makes various vowels sounds.

The timbral character of these tone are similar to what you will hear in Hilyard’s music. They are pure, smooth and rich: exploring both earthy, dark-forest ambiences and deep space-drifts. You’ll find a spectrum of light/dark, hopeful/hopeless and terrestrial/extraterrestrial.

Lost Reveries comes with 80 presets made by Hilyard, and can be easily modified to suit your needs. They’re split into 4 categories: Pads, Plucked Rhythmic Movements and Textures. Xenobyte has 3 oscillators, with standard waveforms; sine, saw , ramp , pulse , triangle as well as white noise and pink noise. Originally, a theremin is a single oscillator musical instrument made of two metal rods—one for pitch and the other for amplitude—controlled by the performer using hand gestures. Its unconventional way of controlling the sound makes the theremin capable of the strangest bleeps, bloops, whuuuuurls, and pprrrzzzzz.

Stagecraft’s Theremin uses the original principle of hand gesture control as a template for developing a new way of controlling a mono synth. Perfectly geared for vintage-style synth leads, this mono-voice synth has hard syncing and tone control features similar to what you see from the great synth pioneers in the early modular synths era.

Control pitch and volume through single variables
The unique idea behind this plugin is to allow you to control pitch and volume each with a single variable, as you would with a real theremin. This allows for new and interesting ways to manipulate sounds. Since Theremin is always mono with portamento, it slides between notes as you move up and down the range.

Additional quantization options
