u73b Compressor

Faithful and unique emulation of an old German broadcast compressor/limiter unit U73b. The device was often used for mastering between 1960 and 1980. It is an all tube vary-mu compressor/limiter with adjustable release time option. We kept the circuit exactly as it was originally designed and only added input and output gain (before and right after compressor circuit) to help with proper adjustment of the compression. The plugin effect has been also supplemented with a VU meter and selectable side-chaining. U73b is great for mastering, mixing drums, bass, guitar, vocals and voice overs. Controls The compressor’s controls are very easy, but the effect of this unique device is audible at the same moment you turn it on:

  • Compressor/Limiter switch – is the upper U73b knob and it switches between Compressor mode (Kompr), Bypass (Durchschalt) and Limiter mode (Begr). The compressor mode has lower threshold setting and very gentle increasing ratio, in opposite, the limiter mode provides higher threshold setting with higher ratio but still with smooth knee.
  • Release time – the first three positions offer fixed release time, the other three positions (marked red) provide adjustable program content dependent release time option.
  • IN – adjust input gain before the compressor/limiter circuit
  • OUT – adjust output gain after the compressor/limiter circuit.
  • Key input – selects the signal source used for controlling the gain reduction
  • HPF – U73b is a vintage device and as such it may not meet present mastering demands. We added a bass management button that simply switches between original sound and desired modern sound (without low frequencies bypass).

u73b Compressor is iLok protected. The hardware key is not necessary, only the License Manager.

Transient Shaper

The ‘Transients’ section lets you shape the transients and sustain of your tracks. The main mix control lets you set the intensity of the effect, while the advanced settings give you control over the stereo linking, bandwidth and envelope length of the detection signal, as well as the maximum boost overage or cut that you want to apply to your signal’s transients or sustain.

Multiband Compressor

The ‘Multiband’ section divides your track into 4 bands with subtractive IIR filters, creating a real-time linear phase Multiband split. Every band has its own compressor that applies logarithmic attack and release directly to the required gain reduction value, instead of to the detection signal, smoothing out the compression effect in an analogue fashion.

Parallel Compressor

The Parallel section lets you apply smooth parallel compression to even out the dynamics in your track in a very natural way, or create a powerful compression effect. You can also reduce the dynamic range without reduction to the peak level. The compressor has a continuous RMS time control and a knee width control that will let you fine-tune the compressor’s sensitivity to react aggressive and digital, or silky and analogue. By adding a parallel compressor to work with the Multiband band compressor this increases the effective compression ratio and makes the processing more obvious and effective.

In addition to expanding transient peaks, Puncher 2 allows you to shape the frequency response of the transient as well as the sustain signal. The plugin splits your audio into three equal parts:

  • Dry – Your original signal
  • Spank – A heavily compressed duplicate

What the Workflow looks like:

  • Balance the three parallel signals from the main level mixer.

  • The meters help you set the right amount of Spank and Heat for any audio signal. (Dial the main Spank/Heat knobs until the meters peak right before the orange line).
  • The style knobs inject desirable sonic flavors into the parallel engines. Engage multiple at once.
  • The solo buttons let you monitor each parallel signal individually for fine-tuning purposes.
  • Turn on Auto Gain to get a consistent plugin output, roughly matching the input level.
  • Output sets the global output level (post Auto Gain).

+10db Compressor is meticulously modelled after one of the industries most iconic hardware compressors.

Unless you refuse to listen to any music after Beethoven, you most certainly have heard this unit in action. Best yet, this is the first time this hardware unit has been available in plugin format.

+10db Compressor is the first of it’s kind channel strip plugin. This plugin is modelled after a very highly sought after compressor hardware unit. We didn’t just use the hardware unit for inspiration, we dug in deep and made sure that it sounded just like the original.

Why Did We Model This Unit?

Here’s the deal. It seems like everybody is modelling hardware these days, but we wanted to do something a little different. We didn’t want to model any hardware units that have been done a million times. We wanted to do something that had never been done before but has been an icon in the recording industry, and the only way to do that was to team up with producer/mixer David Bendeth. He just happened to have a few of these in his rack, so he sent us one to pour over.

Unless you stopped listening to music after “Johnny B Goode” then you have most definitely heard this hardware unit many many times. Think of Led Zeppelin drums.

In order to get this same compressor in hardware, not only would you have to pay over $2,000 to get one, but you’d have to deal with all the other drawbacks of using analog hardware. For a very small fraction of the price, you can get that same sound in the much more convenient software format. There are really no downsides (unless you live in Alaska an need a room heater)

A Few Extra Features

Since we weren’t bound by the limits of the analog hardware, we took the liberty of adding a couple features that make this even more powerful than the original hardware. For one, we added a “Dry Passthrough” knob that makes parallel compression super easy, without having to set up extra buses.

Easy Compression

IA-LA1 is a simple to use Compressor plugin. Threshold and Make up gain are the two main controls. The threshold represents the level at which compression will start to affect the audio. Anything over the threshold is compressed, which reduces the dynamic range of the audio. Upward & Downward Compression: With independent controls, upward and downward compression can be dialled in simultaneously – up to 200%. This allows for sound-shaping fixes, such as balancing vocal levels or clamping down on drum transients whilst simultaneously bringing up the level of the room ambience. Using these two types of compression also offers up creative possibilities, emphasising the splashy explosiveness of transients or creating room tone out of thin air.

Time: For a quick and easy way to scale up the attack and release times of all of the 5 different bands, use the Time dial. This applies timing changes across the board, useful for previewing what might happen with the more surgical per-band attack and release settings.

Limiter: No need to use a third party limiter as XTT’s built in Brickwall Limiter adds unique saturation to the signal, without introducing unwanted distortion. It’s transparent behaviour can be dialled in with an adjustable Boost setting, to ensure that your outgoing audio is as punchy and loud as possible without sacrificing the fidelity of the sound.

Linked In & Out Faders: Gain staging is a really important factor in effective plugin processing. With that in mind, the Input and Output faders can be linked, so that you can tame the signal going into XTT whilst simultaneously keeping control of the output volume. The meters allow accurate visualization of the incoming and outgoing signal whilst you finesse your settings. Keeping a close eye on the meters whilst you tweak your compression values makes it easy to preserve the theoretical loudness of the sound.

Bypass & Master Mix: The bypass control is smoothed to be as click and pop free as possible for unhindered A/B testing. Choose to mix the compressed signal with your original raw audio via the central Mix ratio control, allowing you to dial down the compression ratio for parallel effects.

Visual Feedback: The real-time frequency display shows exactly what’s happening to the signal as it travels through each stage of the compressor in real time. This allows for accurate monitoring for each of the 5 bands and at every step of the signal chain.

Complexer 2 is a dynamics powerhouse, letting you take complete control of your track.

Three Processors – Six Modes

Complexer 2 features three independently controlled dynamics processors, each with a choice of six different modes: Upward and downward compressors, upward and downward expanders, a limiter, and a gate.

Each of the three stages can be processed in a variety of different configurations, including parallel chaining, stereo and mid/side, and multi-band.

Dynamics Chaining

Complexer 2 lets you run the three dynamic processors through a configurable chain. You can have all three in series, or run two in parallel with the third either before or after.

Full Control

Each of the processors feature a vast amount of control. Along with the familiar attack, hold and release, each processor has an advanced look-ahead section to capture peaks ahead of time.

There are also three detection modes: peak, RMS and average. Peak is perfect for limiting, and RMS allows smooth detection – great for compression.

Each processor can also be controlled via an external sidechain.

Multiband

With Complexer 2, you can run each of the processors in their own adjustable frequency band. Not limited to just compression, you can also do multi-band limiting, expanding, and gating, allowing effects ranging from mixing and mastering applications, to creative effects.

Mid/Side and Stereo

There are two separate modes specifically for stereo dynamics processing – mid/side, and stereo.

In stereo mode, you can process the left and right channels independently, and in mid/side mode, you can apply different dynamics to the mid or side channels of the audio.

SphereComp – A dual mode compressor plugin

W. A. Production has created the perfect way to approach and achieve proper compression. All producers know compression can either be an award-winning tool if used properly, or it can totally destroy your mix. Audio students are introduced to compression and most are left confused or scared to death of it. SphereComp is capable of catering to the seasoned pro and the beginner.

To get the same results you get with SphereComp you would have to spend thousands of dollars in high end rack gear, invest time getting acquainted, making adjustments over and over until you get the result you want. Not to mention installation and routing your patch bay. Breathe a sigh of relief. Don’t dread compression. Embrace it.

What is dual – mode?

Dual mode allows YOU to switch from peak compression (regular mode) to RMS compression (buss mode).

If you route your drum tracks (or any other group of tracks) into a group track, you are able to compress this group as a whole. Tying or “gluing” the individual elements to perform as one. The Buss mode is designed especially for that, It reacts to the RMS (root mean square) or the average of the signal, creating a smooth and musical compression. Regular mode reacts to the peaks of the signal, with it, you are able to dynamically shape the individual tracks. Keep in mind that some individual tracks will benefit much more from RMS compression and some groups or mixes will benefit more from peak compression, so experiment and see what works best for your track

Features

  • Input – Control the input gain by +/- 15dB.
  • Threshold – Threshold (dB), when the signal level exceeds the threshold the compressor goes into action.
  • Ratio – (ratio/1) As an example, a 3:1 ratio means that for every 3dB the input signal exceeds the threshold, only 1dB will be allowed to pass by the compressor.
  • Output – Control the output gain by +/- 15dB.

Now that you have your set your levels as a basic start, lets adjust the timing and behavior. When you’re done, you can come back and fine tune everything to make your track seat perfectly in the mix.

  • Buss – Switch between Regular mode (peak compression) and Buss mode (RMS compression).
  • Attack – Time in milliseconds that it will take for the compressor to reach its destination gain reduction, after the signal has crossed the threshold.
  • Release – Time in milliseconds that it will take for the compressor to reach 0 gain reduction after the signal returned below the threshold.
  • Auto Gain – Auto Gain matches the output volume to input volume automatically.
  • Stereo – Switch between stereo and mono modes.
  • Punch – Parallel processing to add punch to the signal before the compression stage.
  • Saturate – Add tube style saturation to the compressed signal.
  • Clean – Make the compressor sound as clean as possible. If Punch or Saturate are on, it will reduce their effect giving you different timbre options.
  • Side Chain – Signal from the right channel input goes to the detector and the signal from the left channel input goes to the compressor.
  • Soft Clipping – Use to round the signal when it approaches 0.0dB and ensures it does not exceed it.
  • Bypass – Allows you to engage and disengage the compressor.
  • Dry/Wet – Mixes between the processed signal and the input signal creating a parallel compression effect, which leaves the peaks untouched while boosting the lower part of the signal.

To help you out there are also 45 presets that focus on individual instruments and drum sounds as well as groups, mix buss and mastering presets.

MTurboComp is the ultimate (not-only) compressor, which emulates most of the classic vintage analogue compressors. Unbelievable sound, uniquely fast workflow, tons of additional features. And you can design your own super-compressors with it!

Compression Reinvented for Easier and Faster Workflow

MTurboComp obviously speeds up the workflow tremendously by providing access to so many classic compressors in a single click. But it doesn’t stop there. Compressors are one of the most overused tools of any audio engineer, yet they are still based on designs and controls decades old, making them so hard to use. How about controlling the amount of compression? Such a basic task, yet almost impossible without changing output level making any decisions almost impossible.

So we took the liberty to set a new standard. All of the compressors MTurboComp emulates have almost the same GUI, so that you always know what to do. They do have the controls the originals did, but they have far more than that: Compression to control amount of compression with minimum changes to output level, Saturation to get additional character, Dry/wet control for parallel compression, and finall, side-chain input, detector high-pass, low-pass and a peak filters, so that you can easily tune the compressor to your audio material. The classic Melda goodies such as automatic gain compensation, safety limiter, mid/side processing and A-H snapshots are included of course.

Emulations Designed by Machine Learning

Developers usually simulate the vintage compressors by analyzing the circuits and test signals. That way it takes a long time to emulate a single compressor and it is prone to all kinds of errors. We took a very different approach – we designed a dynamics processor so versatile, that it could simulate almost anything. And we definitely didn’t dare to set it up manually afterwards – we let the computers do that for us!

It took the computers a long time and didn’t spare us days of listening tests and manual work, but it still got us to a great emulation of more than a dozen classic compressors in a record time :). They don’t sound exactly the same, after all not even the originals don’t sound exactly the same to one another. But maybe MTurboComp sounds better then the originals. Just try and listen for yourself.

Design your Own Super-Compressor!

Well, perhaps you don’t like something about the vintage tools. MTurboComp lets you change them. Or even better, it lets you invent new dynamics processors. With 4 level detectors running in parallel, each following the input or side-chain and having all kinds of settings and transformation curves, a fully featured dynamic equalizer and 2 saturators you can do a lot… almost anything if you count in the modulators. Character

The GLUE control changes the behaviour of the compressor’s detector and processor. When set to 0%, Presser will act as a fast peak compressor, taming transients. At 100%, the compression model will behave like a classic bus compressor, providing more sustained changes and a smoother sound. Use the PUNCH dial to introduce transient punch using a built in dynamic equaliser. Kicks, snares, basslines and more can be made snappier and tighter with this control. HEAT adds analog style saturation both pre and post compressor, introducing harmonics and sonic artefacts. Adjust the dial from subtle warmth to gritty overdrive.

Detector

The CHANNEL LINK dial allows you to choose whether the stereo channels will be processed independently or together. This feature allows for greater control over the compressor’s behaviour, enabling subtly different processing on each channel or preservation of the stereo image. HIGH-PASS controls the frequency of a high pass filter for detection. This helps to reduce the unwanted pumping effect of more delicate compression settings. It’s a common technique to SIDECHAIN a compressor to a different audio trigger. Of course we had to include it as part of Presser, but with a special twist. The variable control can be set to any level between 0% (normal compression) and 100% (sidechain input only), making for some creative sidechain possibilities.

With all the compressor controls you know and love, Presser is the first compressor plugin you should fire up. As well as Aiden Kenway’s innovative additions, it features all the basic compression parameters you need for everyday use. This makes Presser a versatile and powerful tool for shaping the dynamic range of a wide range of different types of audio.
